FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (3-6-5, 0-2 Pac-10) suffered its second consecutive Pac-10 loss this season with a 1-0 shutout against No. 13 California (10-2-1, 3-0 Pac-10). The Bulldogs interlocked in a tough defensive battle, holding the Golden Bears to only six shots Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.
In the first half both teams were denied scoring opportunities time and again, combining for only four shots. Cal had its best chance early in the match when Angel Quintero fired a shot right at senior goalkeeper Jeremy Proud (Auburn, Wash.). It was the only shot on goal Cal took in the first half.
In the second half, however, the Golden Bears took advantage of some Bulldogs' miscues to score the only goal of the match. Pieter Berger kicked the game-winner at the 58:32 mark off a pass from Nick Hatzke that ricocheted off Calen Carr.
The goal was one of three shots on goal attempted by Cal the whole night. Fresno State could never get its offense going. Senior Makoto Anderson (Fresno, Calif.) led the team with three shots on the night. Anderson also had the best chance to tie the match late in the game, but the shot was saved by Cal goalie Josh Saunders.
The win marked the first one for Cal against Fresno State since 1983. It snapped a 13-match unbeaten streak the Bulldogs had in the all-time series. With the loss FS drops to 0-3 this season against ranked teams.
Fresno State will return to action Sunday at noon when they host No. 1 Stanford.
