BOISE, Idaho- After getting its first four victories of the season via shutout, the Fresno State women's soccer team decided to change things up a bit on Sunday. The result was a 4-3 overtime road victory against Boise State, the third consecutive win for the Bulldogs (5-11-0, 4-2-0 WAC) after losing nine of its 10 previous matches.
Junior Erin Sayegusa (Honolulu, Hawaii) scored her second goal of the match three and a half minutes into overtime to give the Bulldogs the victory. Fresno State outshot Boise State 18-14 in the contest, and held a 12-5 advantage in the corner kick department.
The Broncos broke out on top first courtesy of BreeAnn Milligan's goal in the 37th minute. Trailing 1-0, Fresno State wasted no time responding as sophomore Koleen Anderson (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) scored three minutes later off a corner kick by senior Susan Shivokevich (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) to make it 1-1.
After Boise State answered with a goal in the 51st minute to make it 2-1, the 'Dogs answered with another score just one minute later. Sophomore Heather Fox (Morgan Hill, Calif.) drove down the left flank through the defense and fired a shot past Boise State goalkeeper Amy Ortmann to deadlock the match at 2-2.
After trading several shots on goal, the Bulldogs claimed their first lead of the match in the 74th minute when Sayegusa notched the first of her two goals. Senior Virginia Jenkins (Lompoc, Calif.) was credited with the assist on the play. However, the Broncos found the net five minutes later and the two squads entered the first overtime period tied at 3-3.
Sayegusa and the Bulldogs would then secure the victory early in the first overtime. The midfielder scored her second goal of the day when she ran onto a through ball played by freshman Kortney Lewis (Visalia, Calif.) down the center and sent the game-winning strike over a charging Ortmann and into the net for the 4-3 win at the 93:34 mark.
The Bulldogs will face San Jose State on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
