FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State's women's soccer team (6-11-0, 5-2-0 WAC) erupted for three first-half goals and held off a late San Jose State charge in the second half en route to a 3-2 victory on Thursday evening at Bulldog Stadium. The Bulldogs have now won four consecutive matches with just two contests remaining in the regular season.
"We were able to come out and establish ourselves early tonight," said Fresno State head coach Stacy Welp of the first-half barrage. "I was pleased with our effort in the first half and thought that even though San Jose State rallied early in the second half, we were able to calm down and play solid defense at the end of the game."
The 'Dogs ambushed the Spartans (3-10-5, 1-4-2 WAC) in the opening period, outshooting the visitors 10-1 to open a 3-0 lead. Freshman Kortney Lewis (Visalia, Calif.) broke the game open with her seventh goal of the year at the 19:27 mark, corralling a pass from sophomore Heather Fox (Morgan Hill, Calif.) and drilling a shot past San Jose State keeper Eryn Lavey. Ten minutes later, Fox found the net as she headed a loose ball into the goal following an assist from freshman Eriko Yoshiki (Satte City, Japan) for a 2-0 lead.
Two minutes later, Lewis set up junior Erin Sayegusa (Honolulu, Hawaii) for the third Bulldog score, as the midfielder collected a pass into the box and blasted a shot past the keeper.
"We had great possession of the ball in the first half and were able to put the ball in the net," explained Kortney Lewis. "San Jose State came back in the second half but we were able to hold them off. It was great for us to get a victory tonight."
The Spartans foiled Fresno State's shutout bid in the second half, tacking on two scores to cut the lead to 3-2. Jeana Sunseri found herself on a short breakaway and was able to angle a shot past Bulldog keeper Mary-tyler Wahl (Riverside, Calif.) for the first score, and Rebecca Hidalgo came back with a goal in the 65th minute after she took a pass from Christina Morrison in the box.
Overall, the Bulldogs held a 12-5 edge in the shot department and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Wahl was again solid in net, playing the entire match between the posts for the 'Dogs in the victory.
The Bulldogs square off in a road contest against No. 24 Cal State Fullerton on Sunday at 1 p.m.
