WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The men's and women's cross counrty team will travel to Dallas, Texas, for the Western Athletic Confernce Championships. Race day is Sat, Nov. 2. The men's 6K begins at 9:45 a.m. The women's 5K begins at 9:00 a.m.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAL POLY
Improving from last year's fourth place finish, the Fresno State men's cross country team placed second at the Cal Poly Invitational with 60 point . Junior transfer Fernando Cabada (Clovis, Calif.) took first in the 8K run with a time of 26:16.5. Senior Roosevelt Cook (Oakhills, Calif.) finished second for the Bulldogs and eighth overall, coming in at 27:08.5. All seven Bulldogs finished in the top 35. Sixty-three runners and six teams ran in the invitational. UCLA won the invitational with 39 points.
STRONG SHOWING IN SANTA CLARA
The Fresno State women's cross country team finished fourth with 110 points at the Santa Clara Invitational Sat., Oct. 19. Consistently clenching first and second, respectively, for the team were Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) and Olga Gutierrez-Nunez (Visalia, Calif.). Junior Kara June finished fourth overall with a personal best in the 5K of 18:06 and senior Gutierrez-Nunez came in eighth overall and also a personal best time of 18:52. Nevada captured the team title with 36 points. Santa Clara and Fullerton finished second and third, respectively. Featuring nine teams and 112 runners, Nevada won the title with 36 points.
LEADING THE PACK
Monday Oct. 7, Kara June was named WAC Athlete of the Week after finishing first and helping her team to a first place finish at the San Francisco Invitational. In San Francisco the junior from Santa Maria, Calif., also recorded her fastest time, 21:46, of the year in the 6K. Cabada is making his mark. A transfer from the University of Arkansas, Cabada has finished first for the Bulldogs in every meet so far for the season. He was awarded WAC Athlete of the Week after recording his fastest time (24:16) of the year at the Stanford Invitational. He helped Fresno State to a first place finish at the San Francisco State Invitational.
FRESNO STATE SWEEPS IN SAN FRANCISCO
The San Francisco Invitational was the men's first team win of the 2002 season with 22 points. Cabada led the team and finished second overall with a time of 25:36. Cook was the team's second place finisher and third overall with a time of 25:44. The Bulldogs got revenge on Santa Clara, which placed four spots higher than the 'Dogs in Stanford. The women's team captured the San Francisco Invitational for the second year in a row after scoring 28 points. For the women, Kara June did it again. She was the top runner and finished first in the women's 6K with her fastest time of the year, 21:46. Gutierrez-Nunez secured her second place team finish and fourth overall finish for the fourth meet in a row with a time of 22:45. Six Bulldogs finished in the Top 15 and all 10 Bulldogs finished in the Top 50. There were nine teams competing in the women's 6K.
