FRESNO STATE CLEANS UP IN SAN FRANCISCO
The women's team captured the San Francisco Invitational for the second year in a row while the men's team also was victorious. For the women, Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) did it again. She was the top runner and finished first in the women's 6K with her fastest time of the year, 21:46. Olga Gutierrez-Nunez (Visalia, Calif.) secured her second place team finish and fourth overall finish for the fourth meet in a row with a time of 22:45. Six Bulldogs finished in the top 15 and all 10 Bulldogs finished in the top 50. There were nine teams competing in the women's 6K. Four of the teams the Bulldogs faced last Saturday at the Stanford Invitational. This is the men's first team win of the 2002 season. After being named WAC Athlete of the Week, Fernando Cabada (Clovis, Calif.) lead the team and finished second overall with a time of 25:36. Roosevelt Cook (Oakhills, Calif.) was the team's second place finisher and third overall with a time of 25:44. The men's team also faced four of the seven teams last week at Stanford and this week beat Santa Clara, who placed four places above the Bulldogs last week.
LEADING THE PACK
Junior Fernado Cabada is making his mark. A transfer from the University of Arkansas, Cabada has finished first for the Bulldogs in every meet so far for the season. Last week, he was awarded WAC Athlete of the Week after he recorded his fastest time, 24:16, of the year at the Stanford Invitational. He just helped lead Fresno State to a first place finish in the San Francisco State Invitational, last weekend.
UP NEXT
The men's team will head to Cal Poly on Sat., October 19. Last year, the men's team placed fourth out of 11 teams. Roberto Vaca (Sanger, Calif.) was the top finisher in the 8K. The women's team will not compete at Cal Poly this year. They will travel to run in the Santa Clara Invitational. Last year at Cal Poly the women finished fifth out of 14 teams. Olga Gutierrez-Nunez was last years top runner.
STIFF COMPETION IN STANFORD
The Bulldogs men's team placed 15th out of 30 teams in 8K at the Stanford Invitational. On Sept. 28, Fernando Cabada was Fresno State's top finisher and 14th overall with a time of 24:16, his fastest time of year. Coming in second for the Bulldogs and 98th overall was Kyle Cirrincione (Fresno, Calif.) with a time of 25:46, also his fastest time of the year. Roosevelt Cook took third place on the team and 118th overall with a time of 26:09. The 8K featured 230 runners. The men's team also participated in a 4K. Brothers Alex and Ian Mason (Alameda, Calif.) were the top Bulldogs, respectfully, with times of 13:01 and 13:22. The women's team placed 18th out of 33 teams in the 6K. Kara June, for the third meet in a row, placed first for the Bulldogs and 31st overall with a time of 22:12. Her teammate Gutierrez-Nunez placed second on the team 58th overall with a time of 22:38. Stacy Aurit (Union City, Calif.) would be the team's third place finisher and 119th overall with a time of 23:3. The women's 4K featured over 230 runners. In the women's 4K Courtney Stewart (Castro Valley, Calif.) and Andrea Osteen (Bakersfield, Calif.) topped the team. Stewart placed 74th overall with a time of 16:37 and Osteen came in 86th with a time of 17:07.
