BERKELEY, Calif. - California sophomore forward Calen Carr headed in the game-winning goal in the 75th minute as the Bears outlasted Fresno State 1-0 Sunday at Edwards Stadium.
Carr connected with a cross brought in on a corner kick by freshman midfielder Nick Hatzke for his second goal of the year.
Fresno State senior goalie Jeremy Proud recorded three saves on the day to move into second place on the school's career saves list. With 313 career saves, Proud passed David Kramer (311) for second and is five shy of the school's all-time mark held by Kirk Shermer (318).
Cal senior goalkeeper Josh Saunders tallied three stops for the game as the Bulldogs were shutout for the second straight match and the eighth time this season.
The Bulldogs' best scoring opportunity came in the 59th minute when senior midfielder Kupono Low fired a shot right below the crossbar that was swatted away by the outstretched Saunders. Low led Fresno State with two shots, both on goal. The Bears out-shot the Bulldogs 13-4 for the game.
Cal swept the season series from the Bulldogs, marking the first time in the series history that the Bears have won two straight games against Fresno State. FS now leads the all-time series against Cal 15-5-1.
The Bulldogs play their final match of the season Sunday, Nov. 17, when they play host to fifth-ranked UCLA at 2 p.m.
