Cross Country Puts Up a Fight at WAC Championships

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's and women's cross country teams took fifth and eighth respectively today at the WAC Championships. SMU won the men's team title and Rice won the women's title at the meet held Norbuck Park, Dallas, Texas.
In the men's 8K UTEP took second with 63 points, Tulsa just eight points shy finished third with 71 points. Boise St. finished fourth with 85 points. The Bulldogs finished in fifth with 110 points.
Tulsa came in second in the women's 5K with 68 points, just four points less than third place Nevada with 87 points. Competition was close between the fourth and fifth place teams. UTEP finished fourth with 93 points and SMU finished with 95 points. The Bulldogs finished behind Boise St. and Hawaii for eighth place.
For the second year in a row, UTEP's Bashar Ibrahim was the winner of the men's 8K. Fresno State's top finisher was junior Fernando Cabada (Clovis, Calif.) coming in at 12th place overall with a time of 25:56. Senior Roosevelt Cook (Oakhills, Calif) was the team's second place finisher, 19th overall coming in at 26:13. Kyle Cirrincione (Fresno, Calif.) a sophomore finished third on the team and 21st overall with a time of 26:16.
In the women's 5K Karin van Rooyen from SMU won the race with a time of 17:01. Kara June, junior, (Santa Maria, Calif.) was the first place finisher for the Bulldogs with a 12th place overall finish and a time of 18:27. Senior Olga Gutierrez-Nunez (Visalia, Calif.) was the teams second place finisher and 31st overall with a time of 19:24. Stacy Aurit a sophomore from Union City, Calif. was the team's third place finisher and 37th overall with a time of 19:31.
