Four Bulldogs Head to NCAA Regionals

NCAA REGIONALS
Four Bulldogs, junior Fernando Cabada (Clovis, Calif.), senior Roosevelt Cook (Oakhills, Calif.), and sophomore Kyle Cirrincione (Fresno, Calif.) and Junior Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) will participate in the NCAA District 9 Regionals, held in Palo Alto, Calif. The women's 5K statrs at 10a.m. and the men's 8K will start at 11a.m. Roosevelt, Cirrincione and June participated in the Regionals last year. The Bulldogs traveled to Stanford earlier this year where Cook recorded a time of 26:09 an Cirrincione a time of 25:46. June recorded a 6K time of 22:12.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The men's cross country team took fifth out of 8 teams at the WAC Championships in Dallas on Saturday. SMU won the team title with 30 points. Bashar Ibrahim from UTEP was the men's 8K winner with a time of 24:24. Cabada was the top team finisher and 12th overall with a time of 25:56. Cook, 26:13, and Cirrincione, 26:16, rounded out second (19th overall) and third (21st overall), respectively. The women's cross country team took eighth out of 10 teams. Rice won the women's team title with 68 points. The Bulldogs finished with 165 points. In traditional form, Fresno State's top two finishers were junior Kara June and Olga Gutierrez-Nunez. June finshed 12th overall with a time of 18:27 and Gutierrez-Nunez finished 31st with a time of 19:24.
IMPROVEMENT AT CAL POLY
Improving from last year's fourth place finish, the Fresno State men's cross country team placed second at the Cal Poly Invitational with 60 points. Cabada took first in the 8K run with a time of 26:16.5. Cook finished second for the Bulldogs and eighth overall, coming in at 27:08.5. All seven Bulldogs finished in the top 35. Sixty-three runners and six teams ran in the invitational. UCLA won the team title with 39 points.
STRONG SHOWING IN SANTA CLARA
The Fresno State women's cross country team finished fourth with 110 points at the Santa Clara Invitational Oct. 19. Clenching first and second, respectively, for the team were Kara June and Olga Gutierrez-Nunez. June finished fourth overall with a personal-best in the 5K of 18:06 and Gutierrez-Nunez came in eighth overall and also had a personal-best time of 18:52. Nevada captured the team title with 36 points. Santa Clara and Cal State Fullerton finished second and third, respectively. Featuring nine teams and 112 runners, Nevada won the title with 36 points.
LEADING THE PACK
On Oct. 7, Kara June was named WAC Athlete of the Week after finishing first and helping her team to a first place finish at the San Francisco Invitational. In San Francisco the junior from Santa Maria, Calif., also recorded her fastest time, 21:46, of the year in the 6K. Fernando Cabada is making his mark. A transfer from the University of Arkansas, Cabada has finished first for the Bulldogs in every meet so far for the season. He was awarded WAC Athlete of the Week after recording his fastest time (24:16) of the year at the Stanford Invitational. He helped Fresno State to a first place finish at the San Francisco State Invitational.
