FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (3-5) dropped the first game of the series against Stanford (6-2) 6-2. FS committed three errors and left 10 runners on base as they fall in the 2002 home openner.
"We hit the ball fairly well off a real good pitcher, but we didn't get any timely hits. We had a couple of at-bats in the game where guys like Fritz and McGehee hit the ball hard, but the ball didn't carry and McGehee hit it right at someone," said Coach Bennett.
Cardinal RHP Jeremy Guthrie got kept base runners off when he had to and didn't not allow hits when men were in scoring position. The two runs the Bulldogs scored were on solo homers by sophomores shortstop Chris Patrick (Fresno, Calif.) and third baseman Casey McGehee (Aptos, Calif.).
Guthrie, who was an All-American, last season won his eighth straight decision, dating back to last year. Guthrie went seven innings while striking out four.
Senior RHP Bob Runyon suffered his second loss of the season going 6.2 innings while giving up six runs with five being earned. Freshman Sean Ruthven came in relief to pitch 2.1 innings without giving up a run.
"I was real pleased with Ruthven's performance. He pitched outstanding baseball and that's tremendous for a freshman because it gives him confidence," said Bennett.
Stanford hit four doubles on the night that amounted to three runs. Catcher Ryan Garko led the way, going 2-for-5 with two runs score and an RBI. Left fielder Carlos Quentin went 4-for-4 with a run scored.
The Cardinal scored two runs in the third and seventh innings. Garko and first baseman Donny Lucy each singled in a run in the seventh inning.
Junior catcher Ben Fritz hit safely in his eighth straight ballgame, going 1-for-5. Senior outfielder maintained his WAC-leading batting average at .500, going 2-for-4.
Fresno State and Stanford will play game two of the series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m.
