POWAY, Calif. - Fresno State worked itself out of a three-run deficit only to fall behind again as the Bulldogs dropped a 5-3 decision to CS Northridge in the Campbell/Cartier Tournament.
Falling to 3-1 in tournament play, the 'Dogs used three pitchers and were held to four hits while committing three errors against the Matadors.
With CSUN jumping on junior right-hander Leslie Poole, the Matadors scored quickly with a run in the first and three in the third.
Fresno State answered with a three-run equalizer in the bottom of the fourth before CS Northridge stung the Bulldogs with a run in the fifth and sixth inning for the upset win.
In the fourth, senior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti connected for her second home run on the year with a shot to left field. Sophomore designated player Lori Hoffman followed with a walk and Sha Oliver came in to pinch run. Sophomore left fielder Pam Perez singled to put runners on first and second. After freshman shortstop Lecitica Pacheco walked to load the bases, juniof catcher Pam West grounded out but got the second run in. Fresno State then scored its third run on a wild pitch.
CS Northridge, which received votes in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 preseason poll, improved to 7-7 overall while Fresno State dropped to 6-3.
Senior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti had two of the team's four hits after going 2-3 with a run, RBI and a walk in the Bulldogs' losing effort.
Fresno State closes out tournament play on Sunday, Feb. 17, against Utah State at 12:00 p.m.
