FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (4-7) ran into another good Pac-10 pitcher Friday night. A weekend after facing two tough Stanford pitchers, the Bulldogs were shut down by Washington (4-1) RHP Shawn Kohn in the 5-1 loss.
Kohn allowed just three hits and one run to FS to pick up his second win of the season on a complete game.
"He was changing his speeds and had kind of a little slurve. He really did a job of moving his pitches around," said Coach Bennett.
On the other end senior RHP Bob Runyon (Atwater, Calif.) shut down the Huskies for eight consecutive innings. The only difference was the first inning when Washington touched Runyon for five runs on four hits. After the first inning Runyon settled down and allowed no runs and only two hits.
The Bulldog bats were quited, however. Kohn did not allow a hit to FS until the sixth inning when sophomore shortstop Chris Patrick (Fresno, Calif.) got an infield single.
Patrick would go on to produce the only Bulldog run on a solo homer in the eighth inning, his second of the season.
The Huskies were led by outfielder Jay Garthwaite, who belted a three-run home run in the first inning to extend the lead to 5-0.
The three hits in the game for FS were the lowest output of the season. Prior to that FS was held to six hits by Cal State Fullerton in the first game of that series.
With the loss, Runyon falls to 1-3 on the year.
The Bulldogs will continue their series against the Huskies tomorrow at 1 p.m.
