FRESNO, Calif. - For the third straight day Fresno State (5-8) fell behind against Washington (5-2), giving up four runs in the first inning. FS would eventually come back to tie the ballgame, but fell 10-7 to drop its fourth consecutive series this season.
Sophomore LHP Mike Hernandez (Fresno, Calif.) got the start for the Bulldogs and like senior RHP Bob Runyon (Atwater, Calif.) and junior RHP Ben Fritz (San Jose, Calif.), the first inning was a nightmare.
"It's puzzling because there's really not any reason for it. This one was different than the others because we gave them six outs in the first inning. The other game was on walks and hits, but this was a combination of everything," said Coach Bennett.
The Huskies scored four runs in the first inning off four hits and two Bulldog errors. The big blow in the inning was a two-run double by outfielder Jay Garthwaite. The final run of the inning came on an error by first baseman Ben Fritz that allowed Garthwaite to score from third.
Fresno State fell behind 7-3 before rallying in the sixth inning on back-to-back-to-back homers by Fritz, sophomore third baseman Casey McGehee (Aptos, Calif.) and senior outfielder Tobey Riday-White (Berkeley, Calif.).
McGehee and Riday-White both hit their home runs and the first pitch they saw. It marked the third of the season for each of the Bulldogs. McGehee would finish the game 2-for-3 with two solo home runs.
Freshman RHP Sean Ruthven (Alpharetta, Ga.) would be tagged with his first loss of the season coming in relief and pitching two innings. In the seventh inning the Huskies got three runs to break the 7-7 tie and pull ahead.
Second baseman Michael Done led off the inning with a home run. A walk and a double later and Ruthven left the ballgame in favor of senior RHP Francisco Nieves (Oakland, Calif.).
Washington singled and sacrifice flied in a pair of runs and would hang on for the 10-7 victory.
RHP Greg Colburn picked up the win despite going only one inning while allowing four runs.
Sophomore shortstop Chris Patrick (Fresno, Calif.) extended his team-high hitting streak to 11, going 1-for-6 on the day.
Fresno State will be in action at Long Beach State on Tuesday for one game at 6 p.m.
