FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head volleyball coach Lindy Vivas announced the signing of three student-athletes to play for the Bulldogs next fall.
All three are out-of-state players in Janzy Crane (Granby, Colo.), La'akeaokamahealani Campbell (Kaneohe, Hawai'i) and Amanda Magalei (Bountiful, Utah).
The three will join a Bulldog team that returns 10 letterwinners and five starters from an underclassmen dominated team that qualified for its fourth consecutive Western Athletic Conference Championship Tournament after going 14-10 overall.
Crane, a 5-11 middle blocker, was a four-year varsity starter after splitting time at two different high schools (Middle Park High, 9-10 and Boulder High, 11-12). Crane went to two state championships, including winning the Colorado State 5A title as a junior. Picking up all-state and all-county honors as a prepster, Crane also excelled in track in which she was a state qualifier and a regional champion in the triple jump. She currently plays for the Norco Volleyball Club out of Boulder, Colo.
Campbell, a 5-10 outside hitter/setter from Iolani High School, also was a four-year varsity starter and participated in the field events of discus and shot put. Directing IHS to an Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship title as a senior, Campbell also led her prep team to a state title and picked up first team all-state honors in 2001.
The three-time ILH pick also served as team captain her senior year and guided her high school team to a 20-0 record her final year. Playing club ball with Maunalani, her team finished second at the Junior Olympics in Utah. Campbell is currently playing club with the Outrigger Canoe Club.
Magalei, a 5-11 outside hitter from Bountiful High School, was a three-sport letterwinner in volleyball, basketball and track and field. She played one year of volleyball and ran track at the College of Eastern Utah. In volleyball, Magalei tallied 214 kills (2.78 kpg) and 86 total blocks.
Picking up the discus state championship crown and a region track championship title as a sophomore at BHS, Magalei helped BHS to a state title in basketball while garnering a state crown in the long jump. She was a member of the American Samoa bobsled team and her father, Marvin, played football at Southern Utah. She will enter Fresno State as a sophomore in eligibility.
Crane, Campbell and Magalei make Bulldog volleyball history as the first to hail from Colorado, Hawai'i and Utah, respectively.
"All three have played multiple sports and have a solid athletic background," head coach Lindy Vivas said. "We have had tremendous success with players like Janzy, La'akea, and Amanda who bring versatility and a solid work ethic to the program."
