FRESNO, Calif. - In the longest game of the day, third-seeded California took No. 4-seed Fresno State to 10 innings to win by a score of 2-1. Cal's first baseman, Veronica Nelson, hit a ball to deep left-center to score the winning run with two outs.
The Golden Bears opened the game with a score in the first inning, after Fresno State's pitcher Jamie Southern had arguably her toughest inning this season. With the bases loaded Nelson recorded her first of two RBI with a walk.
That score held until the fifth inning, when Fresno State tied the game. Left fielder Julie Selbicky singled to get on first. Pinch runner Sha Oliver advanced to third after two singles and then scored after a sacrifice fly by Tiffany Whipple.
The winning pitcher was Jocelyn Forest. She improved her record to 22-12 after allowing seven hits, one run and striking out five. The loss went to Jaime Southern, who dropped to 32-9 after allowing two runs on five hits. Southern punched out seven.
Cal advances to play No. 2 seeded Stanford tomorrow at 5 p.m.
Fresno State will Pacific on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Bulldog Diamond in an elimination game. The Tigers stayed alive in the Regional by defeating Evansville 6-0 on Thursday night.
