FRESNO, Calif. - No. 14 Fresno State softball maintained its three-game lead over second-place Hawai'i and Tulsa after earning a split in Western Athletic Conference play as the Bulldogs recorded a 4-0 victory over Loyola Marymount at Bulldog Diamond.
Junior right-hander Leslie Poole pitched five-hit ball in six innings of work while walking one and striking out one to go to 15-5 on the year. It was Poole's fourth shutout on the season. Freshman right-hander Jamie Southern pitched the final inning and gave up one hit while striking out two.
Senior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti belted her sixth home run of the year. Fossatti led the bottom of the sixth inning off with a solo home run to left center off LMU pitcher Jennifer Heliotes.
Freshman left fielder Julie Selbicky added a RBI after going 2-2 while freshman shortstop Leticia Pacheco had the other two RBI after going 1-2.
After being stung in game one via a fielding error, the Bulldogs played flawless ball in the night cap after scoring four runs on seven hits. LMU had six and committed an error.
The Bulldogs posted two runs in the second before adding one in the fourth and sixth innings.
In the second with one out, sophomore second baseman Pam Perez reached safely on a error by the LMU shortstop. Selbicky advanced Perez on a sac bunt before junior catcher Pam West drew a walk. With runners on first and second, both Selbicky and West advanced a base on a wild pitch thrown by Heliotes. Trying to stretch a well-hit single into a double, Pacheco singled to right center to knock in both Bulldogs before being tagged out a second base.
In the fourth, Southern led off with a single to left field. After sophomore designated player Lori Hoffman grounded out and Perez grounded out to move Southern to third, Selbicky then singled to right field to score Southern.
The Bulldogs and Loyola Marymount split the four-game series as both went 1-1 at home.
Fresno State closes out its regular-season home schedule on Saturday, May 4 with a 1:00 p.m. conference doubleheader against Portland State, which played a league doubleheader at San Jose State this evening.
Fresno State will acknowledge the careers of four Bulldog seniors in Lashme Gomez, Fossatti, Vanessa Czarnecki and Tiffany Whipple.
In addition, the Bulldogs will look to clinch the WAC title on Saturday. Fresno State is gunning for its fifth consecutive WAC crown and sixth in the last seven years.
