WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Fresno State wrapped up invitational play just like the way it did with the previous three matches by collecting a three-game sweep over William & Mary in the William & Mary Hi-IQ Tournament.
The Bulldogs posted a 30-19, 30-13 and 30-19 victory over the Tribe en route to collecting a 4-0 tournament record.
Senior outside hitter Christy Burnett was named Most Valuable Player after hitting .341 with 37 kills, 20 digs, 14 service aces and three blocks. Joining Burnett on the all-tournament team was senior middle blocker Java Johnson and sophomore outside hitter Kristen Fenton.
In the match, Fresno State hit .346 with 35 digs, 10 service aces and six total blocks. For the fourth straight match the Bulldogs also held their opponents below .100 as the Tribe hit .021 with 30 digs and five blocks.
Sophomore outside hitter Kristen Fenton led all players in kills with 15 while hitting .346 with five digs and two aces. Senior libero Heather Farr led all players with 12 digs while junior middle blocker Carrie Hartt had a match-high five blocks.
Fresno State's 4-0 start marks the 11th time in school history that the Bulldog volleyball progam jetted out to a successful start. It also marks the sixth time under 12th-year head coach Lindy Vivas that the Bulldogs have kicked off the year with a 4-0 slate.
"The team played excellent volleyball for the first weekend of play," Vivas said. "They worked well together and put together just a nice team effort. That will be a strength of ours this season. Christy (Burnett) had a fabulous all-around weekend. She scores a lot of points and she is an effective player in both the front and back court."
Fresno State (4-0) will be back in action next weekend in its own invitational, Sept. 6-7. The Bulldogs open their 2002 home schedule next Friday, Sept. 6, against Air Force at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Fresno State then meets Nicholls State at 2:30 p.m. before closing out with No. 20 UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 p.m.
