FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State welcomed the alumni Sunday night at Bulldog Stadium as the teams battled in a competitive match that saw the former Bulldogs stun the 2002 squad 2-1.
"This is a game I started when I got here," said Coach Chesler. "The alumni like playing at Bulldog Stadium and it's important to recognize them."
The alumni, in return showed their gratitude by pulling off the upset, despite being outshot 24-7. Dana McGregor (1997-00) and Tom Gleason (1984-86) each scored to account for the alumni scoring.
The alumni scored 1:25 into the match as Jason Berg (1991-94) set up McGregor in the middle of the box area. It was just one of four shots the former Bulldogs took in the half compared to 15 by Fresno State.
FS tied the match at the 62:51 mark when freshman forward Andrew Gregorio (Hilmar, Calif.) connected on a pass from sophomore midfielder Dan Oka (Morgan Hill, Calif.).
The alumni seemed to be running out of steam, but managed to penetrate the Bulldog defense to score once again at the 70:11 time period. Gleason found a loose ball in the box area and poked it through freshman goalkeeper Eric Kronberg (Santa Rosa, Calif.), who had substituted in at halftime for senior Jeremy Proud (Auburn, Wash.).
Gregorio finished the match with six shot attempts while four other Bulldogs ended up with at least three shots. Only one alumni attempted more than one shot, Danny Risch (1997-00) with two. Despite being outshot 24-7, the alumni were more efficient with their shots as four of the seven were on goal, while just six of the Bulldogs' 24 were on goal.
"It's a continuing problem," said Chesler. "We outshot a lot of teams last year and didn't put balls in the net and tonight their were a lot of plays that should have finished with a score."
Fresno State returns to action Friday against UC Irvine and next Sunday against Ohio State in the 21st annual Goal Rush Classic.
