DENVER - Fresno State (0-2) continued its ineffeciency in the scoring area, getting shutout for the second straight time. The Bulldogs, who finished a weekend of matches in the state of Colorado, fell victims against Denver 2-0. The Pioneers (1-0) outshot the Bulldogs 14-5 with a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Fresno State was trying to rebound after a 3-0 loss at the hands of Colorado just two days prior, but ran into some more tough defense in Denver. Five different Fresno State players attempted one shot with three of them being on goal.
The Pioneers got on the board at the 26:52 mark when Katie Antongiovanni connected with Mycheal Movius for the first score. Movius set up an Antongiovanni header in the box are off a cornerkick.
Late in the second half Denver added an insurance goal on another cornerkick. This time Jamie Norwood set up Kristin Warren for a head shot in the box are.
Cornerkicks were the story in the match as Denver used them to set up its offense time and again. The Pioneers attempted 16 cornerkicks on the day to none by the Bulldogs. Fourteen of the 16 corners by the Pioneers came in the second half.
This marks the first time ever Fresno State has started the season with back-to-back shutout losses and the second time they've started with consecutive losses. In 1995, the Bulldogs began the season with three consecutive losses.
Last year, the Bulldogs were the first team ever to start the year 2-0, scoring a combined five goals in those matches.
Fresno State will try to get on the right track next weekend at the UNVL Tournament. The Bulldogs will face Southern Utah and UNLV on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
