LAS VEGAS - Fresno State (1-2) needed some goals and that's exactly what they got in a 4-0 win against Southern Utah Friday night in Las Vegas. The Bulldogs came into the UNLV Tournament with consecutive shutouts to start the season, but broke off the schnide against the Thunderbirds for their first win of the season.
Fresno State not only shot a season-high 15 shots with 11 being on goal, but held Southern Utah to only two shots on the day. The two shots is the lowest output by a Bulldog opponent since Stacy Welp took over the team last season.
Senior defender Virginia Jenkins (Lompoc, Calif.) along with junior Kristyn Kellogg (Atascadero, Calif.) paced the Bulldog backline, that held Southern Utah to zero shots in the first half of the match.
On offense the Bulldogs were led by a pair of freshmen in forward Katri Nokso-koivisto (Kokkola, Finland) and midfielder Kortney Lewis (Visalia, Calif.). Nokso-koivisto scored twice in the match, including the first goal at the 23:21 mark. Lewis scored the second goal of the match, on a pass from junior forward Erin Sayegusa (Honolulu, Hawaii) at the 27:52 mark.
The third goal of the match involved the veteran duo of seniors forward Susan Shivokevich (Tousand Oaks, Calif.) and Jenkins. Shivokevich connected for her first goal of the season on Jenkins' pass from the right side.
The four goals are the highest total in a match for Fresno State since Oct. 27, 2000, when the Bulldogs defeated TCU 4-2.
Senior goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl (Riverside, Calif.) combined with freshman Chelsea Mays (Littleton, Colo.) to give the Bulldogs their first shutout since Oct. 14, of last season, when they blanked UTEP 1-0.
The win extends the Bulldog winning streak to five matches on a neutral site . The streak dates back to 1999 when Fresno State defeated Utah State 2-0, in the Pacific Invitational.
Fresno State returns to action Sunday at noon against the host school, UNLV.
