This Week
The Bulldog diving squad will participate in its second diving event of the season at the UCLA Diving Invitational Friday and Saturday. Sophomore Ashleigh Raley finished tenth in the 1-meter (446.6 points) and the platform (303.8) and 19th in the 3-meter (193.1 points) at the meet last year. The swim team will have the week off before embarking on its final regular season road dual meet of the year at Oregon State. Last season, the Beavers outlasted the Bulldogs 151-143 in Fresno. Carolyn Wigginton led the squad with wins in the 100 and 200 Back.
A Look Back (at UC Irvine/at San Diego)
Fresno State junior Kristi Collins swam the 200 Fly in a career best time of 2:07.73 to help lead the Bulldogs to a 126-111 victory over San Diego Friday at the USD Sports Center. Collins also recorded a team season high in the 200 IM where she touched the wall in 2:12.04 to come in second as well. Fresno State won the two relay events of the meet and tallied 12 top-three finishes to lead them to victory. Through the 11 swimming events, the Bulldogs trailed USD 111-94 but without any available divers, San Diego was forced to concede 32 diving points and the meet. On Saturday, Fresno State completed the weekend sweep with a 158.50-141.50 victory over UC Irvine. The Bulldogs won nine of the 16 events including the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions behind the performance of sophomore Ashleigh Raley. Fresno State recorded 22 top-three finishes for the contest.
On the Road Again
Since opening the season at home against Nevada, Fresno State has been on the road ever since. This week's UCLA Diving Invitational mars the tenth straight road meet for the Bulldogs. Overall, FS will have 11 straight road contests (Oregon State, Jan. 25) before closing out the regular season at home against San Diego State (Feb. 1) and conference rival San Jose State (Feb. 8). The 'Dogs have posted a 6-1-1 road record this year, an eighth place finish at the Speedo Cup Invitational and two fifth place finishes at the UC Irvine Invitational.
Leaving Their Mark
Melissa Johnson's pool record in the 200 Free at Northern Arizona (11/23) marked the second time this season that the Bulldogs had established a pool record at an opponent's site. Greer McGettrick set a new pool mark in the 50 Breast at Cal Baptist (11/8).
Youth is Served
This season's Fresno State squad is comprised of 22 underclassmen (11 freshmen and 11 sophomores) led by sophomores Carolyn Wigginton, Melissa Johnson and Ashleigh Raley. 78 of the Bulldogs' 126 top-three finishes (61.9%) have come from underclassmen including 24 of the squad's 36 first place finishes. Johnson has a team high tying 17 top-three finishes and Wigginton has recorded 15 to rank fourth.
