This Week
The Fresno State swim team will embark on its final regular season road dual meet of the year at Oregon State. The diving squad will not compete at the meet. With a victory, the Bulldogs can eclipse last season's dual meet win mark of six and stay on pace to match the 2000-01 team's total of nine. OSU has won its last six dual meets including victories over Utah (148-134) and BYU (131-106) two weeks ago. Last season, the Beavers outlasted the Bulldogs 151-143 in Fresno. Carolyn Wigginton led the squad with wins in the 100 and 200 Back.
A Look Back (UCLA Diving Invitational)
Fresno State sophomore Ashleigh Raley finished fourth in the 1-meter diving competition at the UCLA Diving Invitational last weekend. Raley tallied an overall score of 459.85 between the finals and preliminary sessions. In the prelims, Raley garnered 224.65 points to rank third. Freshman McKenzie Elston established a career high in the event with 201.60 points.
On the Road Again
Since opening the season at home against Nevada, Fresno State has been on the road ever since. This week's meet at Oregon State marks the eleventh straight (and final) road contest for the Bulldogs. Fresno State closes out the regular season at home against San Diego State (Feb. 1) and conference rival San Jose State (Feb. 8). The 'Dogs have posted a 6-1-1 road record this year as well as an eighth place finish at the Speedo Cup Invitational and two fifth place finishes at the UC Irvine Invitational. Last year, the Bulldogs were 5-3 away from Fresno.
Youth is Served
This season's Fresno State squad is comprised of 22 underclassmen (11 freshmen and 11 sophomores) led by sophomores Carolyn Wigginton, Melissa Johnson and Ashleigh Raley. 78 of the Bulldogs' 126 top-three finishes (61.9%) have come from underclassmen including 24 of the squad's 36 first place finishes. Johnson has a team high tying 17 top-three finishes and Wigginton has recorded 15 to rank fourth.
Leaving Their Mark
Melissa Johnson's pool record in the 200 Free at Northern Arizona (11/23) marked the second time this season that the Bulldogs had established a pool record at an opponent's site. Greer McGettrick set a new pool mark in the 50 Breast at Cal Baptist (11/8).
