FRESNO, Calif. - Fourth-seeded Chloe Carlotti struggled in her first competition of the season, falling to Illinois' Jennifer McGaffigan 6-2, 7-6 (9) in the opening round of the Riviera All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Carlotti had missed the Bulldog Classic two weeks ago due to an injured knee. The two-time All-American started slowly against the 44th-ranked McGaffigan but stayed close in the second half before succumbing 11-9 in a tiebreaker.
Things didn't get much better for Carlotti in doubles. Teaming with Lucia Tallo, the eighth-ranked team in the nation received a tough draw, playing second-seeded Zerena Mayes and Jennifer Magley of Florida in the first round. Fresno State's duo fell 8-5.
Carlotti still has a chance to compete in the consolation singles bracket, which begins Friday.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships (its counterpart, the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships, takes place in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the same time), the Nov. 6-9 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis' three national championship events during the season.
The premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season, the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships feature the top players in NCAA Division I tennis.
