The Series
Fresno State leads the all-time series versus Boise State and UTEP by a combined 23-1 mark. Against Boise State, the Bulldogs have captured all seven meetings with six being three-game victories. The two teams first met on Sept. 10, 1994 in Fresno with the 'Dogs collecting a sweep. In WAC play, however, Fresno State holds a 4-0 lead in regular-season play. Against UTEP, the Bulldogs have won 16 of the 17 meetings while going 2-1 in the last three. The Miners lone victory happened in Fresno on Nov. 11, 2000 when UTEP defeated Fresno State in five. In WAC regular-season play, the Bulldogs are 15-1 with eight sweeps while battling the Miners once in the WAC Volleyball Championship Tournament (won 3-1 on Nov. 24, 1997). The two programs first met on Oct. 25, 1992 in Fresno and the Bulldogs collected a 3-0 win.
The Schedule
Opening the year by playing 10 of its first 13 matches on the road, Fresno State will end up playing 16 away to 11 home in 2003. In the first three months the Bulldogs will have played 15 road matches while appearing in the North Gym just seven times. Fresno State closes out the regular season by playing at home in four of its final five contests. Compared to 2002, the Bulldogs' schedule featured 17 road games to 13 at home. In the last two years combined, not counting postseason play for 2003, the Bulldogs will have played nine more road contests (33-24). Since 2000, Fresno State will have played 60 road games, to just 51 home games. Being a road warrior proved favorable for the 'Dogs in 2002 as they went 12-5 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
Head Coach Lindy Vivas
In her 13th season as head coach of the Bulldog volleyball program, Lindy Vivas (UCLA, 1980) collected her 300th career win in the season opener against New Mexico on Aug. 29. Recording her 100th Western Athletic Conference win against Rice on Sept. 25 and posting the programs 200th overall league victory versus Nevada on Oct. 11, Vivas garnered her third WAC Coach of the Year honors last fall. Vivas has led the Bulldog volleyball program to seven 20-win seasons while advancing to postseason play six times. With three NCAA Tournament appearances, including two in the last five years, her 2002 squad established the school's best win percentage (.767, 23-7) while advancing to the WAC Tournament Semis for the second straight season. Averaging 19 wins a year, Vivas owns a 13-year record of 241-151 (.615) at Fresno State and a 17-year career mark of 313-211 (.597). The Bulldogs, who are 108-50 (.684) at home under Vivas, have gone 25-5 in the North Gym the past three seasons. Vivas has coached eight AVCA all-region/all-district winners and 24 all-WAC picks (27 overall). Leading the 'Dogs to all five WAC Volleyball Tournaments (1996-98, 2001-02), she directed the program to its best start (16-2) and third-most wins (23) in 2002. Opening the 2003 season at No. 44, Vivas has directed the program to four of its five preseason listings.
Week 7 in Review: 'Dogs Go 1-0 on the Road in WAC Play
Fresno State went 1-0 on the road in the third week of Western Athletic Conference action as the Bulldogs posted a four-game victory over Nevada ... The WAC win was a first for the 'Dogs in Reno and the 200th league win overall for the Bulldog volleyball program ... The last time that Fresno State won in Reno, Nev., was when current assistant volleyball coach Ruth Lawanson was an All-American for the 1984 team ... In '84, the Bulldogs swept the Wolf Pack in non-conference play in Reno, Nev., on Sept. 22 ... Still further, the victory was the second for the Bulldogs in conference play overall in Reno, Nev., as Fresno State defeated Nevada in Big West play on Nov. 20, 1989 ... Therefore, Fresno State improved to 5-3 overall in regular-season conference play and goes to 2-4 all-time in conference regular-season action in Reno, Nev. ... The victory also made the series even at four wins a piece in the last eight meetings while the 'Dogs improved to 13-4 versus the Wolf Pack in the last 17 contests ... The win, however, was unique for Fresno State as it was held below a .200 hitting percentage for just the fourth time on the year as well as the Bulldogs winning their first match of the year in which they had a lower hitting percentage (.193-.235) and fewer kills (64-71) ... Fresno has been on the road five of the last six weeks and has gone 10-3 away from home ... Opening the WAC season at 4-1, the 'Dogs have won four of their first five league matches for the 10th time overall and five times in WAC play (1992, '98, 2001 and '02) ... Fresno State opened the first week of conference play by going 2-0 as well as going 2-0 in the first week of WAC action ... That marked the 11th time overall and sixth under Vivas that the Bulldogs opened league play perfectly and the fifth time overall and under Vivas that they opened WAC play perfectly ... At 14-4, Fresno State has won at least 14 of its first 18 matches for the fifth time in school history - four of which has come under head coach Lindy Vivas (1976,'91,'98 and 2002) ... In the years that Fresno State won at least 14 of its first 18 matches, three teams went on to post 20-win seasons (1991, '98 and 2002) and all three advanced to the NCAA's ... In the years that Fresno State won 10 of its first 13 matches, six Bulldog teams went on to post 20-win campaigns (1991, '95, '96, '97, '98 and 2002) ... Of those six, four went on to postseason play (1991, '98 and 2002 at NCAA's; 1995 at National Invitational Volleyball Championship) ... Against their West Region opponents, the Bulldogs are 7-2 as they own wins over Cal Poly, UC Riverside, Northern Arizona, Rice, Tulsa, San Jose State and Nevada and a loss to No. 19 Long Beach State and No. 2 Hawai'i.
All-American in the Making?
Fresno State has had only one All-American in school history and that individual is current assistant coach Ruth Lawanson. Named to the 2002 AVCA All-West Region team, junior outside hitter Kristen Fenton (Marysville, Mich.) is putting up exceptional numbers this season. Already tallying nearly 400 kills and currently averaging 5.26 kills per game, she has appeared in all five weeks of the NCAA Division I statistics in kills per game and currently ranks No. 19 (5.26 kpg). One of four players in the WAC averaging better than 5.00 kills per game in overall play, Fenton has been a four-time all-tournament pick this fall, including two MVP honors. As the Bulldogs' top kill leader in 17 of 18 matches and hitting .300 all season, she has had 20 or more kills in 13 matches, including her first career 30-kill match with 31 against then No. 19 Long Beach State; she became the first Bulldog in four years to tally a 30-kill performance. The two-time WAC Player of the Week has already set five school rally-scoring records this season. She owns the record for most kills in three (22 vs. Tulsa) and five (31 vs. #19 Long Beach State) games. Fenton holds the record for most total attempts in four (63 vs. Nevada) and five (76 vs. #19 Long Beach State) games. She also holds the mark for hitting percentage in a four-game match, 15-19 attempts (.667, 13-1-18 vs. New Mexico). In WAC games, only, Fenton is one of two players averaging better than 5.80 kills per game.
Eyeing 1,000 Career Kills/Single-Season Kill Mark
Fenton eclipsed the 900-career kill plateau two weeks ago for a career total of 925. Just 75 kills shy of being just the ninth Bulldog to amass 1,000+ career kills, Fenton is on pace to become the second-fastest Bulldog to reach the historic milestone. She is averaging 3.67 kills per game (252 games/70 matches) in her career - a mark that currently ranks No. 5 all-time at Fresno State. While currently hitting at a career mark of .290 (No. 6 all-time), Fenton has a .341 hitting percentage on the season and is one of eight players in school history to hit at least .300 in a season (last year she finished at .301 to rank No. 6). In addition, she is flirting with the school's single-season hitting percentage record (.345 by middle blocker Tera Booker, 1995). Still further, Fenton is challenging the school's all-time single-season kill and kill per game record, which was set by Paola Paz-Soldan in 1991 (630, 5.6 kpg, 112 games in 34 matches). With a streak of 34 consecutive double-figure kill matches dating back to last season (629 kills in 130 games for a 4.84 kill per game average), Fenton is averaging 20.44 kills per match (5.26 kpg) this fall and is 262 shy of tying the school's single-season kill record.
Just Heating Up
Senior middle blocker Carrie Hartt (Manteca, Calif.) sparked the Bulldogs to a four-game road victory over Nevada. Hitting a team-high .270 against the Wolf Pack, she served up five of the team's eight total service aces to lead all players. With a career-high five service aces notched versus Nevada, Hartt is the latest Bulldog to collect five service aces in a match since Christy Burnett, who had five against UNLV on Sept. 21, 2000. Hartt sparked the Bulldogs offensively when she hit .368 (9-2-19) with an ace in the final two games. In the first two games, she recorded four service aces and had two blocks. Scoring 20 or more points in a match for the sixth time on the season, Hartt has had at least one total block in every match. Recording her 29th career double-figure kill match against Nevada, she also picked up a block solo and a block assist versus the Wolf Pack. With the two total blocks, Hartt surpassed Anamie Buckelew (251, 1996-99) to move up to No. 8 all-time in career total blocks (252) at Fresno State. With 51 career block solos, she also is now four block solos shy of sharing the No. 10 all-time spot with former Bulldog Kara McKeown (55, 1997-98). Dating back to last season, Hartt has totaled 164 blocks in the last 36 matches for an average of 4.56 blocks per match and a 1.25 block per game average in last 131 games played. On the year, she is second on the team in kills (214), kills per game (3.40), hitting (.271), blocks (61), blocks per game (0.97) while second in service aces (25, 0.40 sapg) and points scored (276.0).
Other Bulldog Top Performances
Hitting better than .300 for the seventh-straight week, Fenton posted a match-high 21 kills and had 13 digs while freshman outside hitter Tuli Peters (Laie, Hawaii) collected a match-high 22 digs to go along with 13 kills ... Having led the Bulldogs in kills in 17 of 18 matches, Fenton scored 20 or more points for the 14th time on the year while picking up her 13th 20-kill match of the season ... Looking to be just the fourth Bulldog to average at least 5.00 kills per game in a season, Fenton leads the team overall in kills (368), kills per game (5.26) and hitting (.341) while third in digs (189, 2.70 dpg) and blocks (47, 0.67 bpg) ... Peters recorded her third 20-plus dig match and eighth double-double of the year ... Leading the WAC in digs per game in league games, only, for the second straight week (4.88 dpg), she has had 10 or more digs in every match but three (15 of 18) while four kills shy of being one of three Bulldogs to tally at least 200 kills on the year ... Freshman outside hitter Alison Pitton (Elk Grove, Calif.) tied her season-high mark in digs with six against Nevada ... Sophomore outside hitter La'akea Campbell (Kaneohe, Hawaii) recorded a career-best 12 digs against Nevada ... It was her second career double-figure dig match as she tallied 11 against Idaho State earlier in the year ... Junior middle blocker Tiffany Bishop (St. Anne, Ill.) has recorded at least one total block in 17 of 18 matches this fall while hitting at least .300 or better eight times ... Sophomore setter Robyn Keune (Ventura, Calif.) dished out 48 assists last week and, with 894 assists on the year, is 106 assists shy of becoming the seventh Bulldog setter to record at least a 1,000-assist season ... Keune would join Whitney Arena, Diann Aufdermaur, Brenda Gregersen, Jenny Streltzoff, Kieran O'Leary and Traci Sliester as setters to post a 1,000-assist season and it would mark the 13th time in Fresno State single-season history for a Bulldog to post 1,000 or more assists ... With a season-best streak of eight 10+ dig matches and having notched three 10-plus dig performances in her last five, junior libero Tina Brennan (Woodinville, Wash.) eclipsed the 700-career dig plateau two weeks ago and, with 703 career digs, is 297 shy of tallying 1,000 career digs ... She, along with Fenton, who has 689 career digs, will race each other to become the sixth Bulldog to total 1,000 career digs.
Setting a Standard
Keune was pushed into a starting role this season after joining the Bulldogs as a walk on last fall. With the loss of AVCA All-West Region Honorable Mention setter Whitney Arena, Keune has responded beautifully by running the 'Dogs offense without skipping a beat from a year ago. With the Bulldogs hitting .255 on the year, Keune has totaled 894 assists for a 12.77 assist per game average. Nationally-ranked twice in assists per game this season, she currently ranks No. 25 (12.82) in the latest NCAA stats (Oct. 5). By tallying 48 assists against Nevada last week, Keune is 106 assists shy of becoming the seventh Bulldog setter to record at least a 1,000-assist season. She would join Arena, Diann Aufdermaur, Brenda Gregersen, Jenny Streltzoff, Kieran O'Leary and Traci Sliester as setters to post a 1,000-assist season and it would mark the 13th time in Fresno State single-season history for a Bulldog to collect 1,000 or more assists.
WAC Freshman of the Year Candidate?
For the second straight week, Peters is leading the conference in digs per game for WAC games, only. Opening the first week of league play with a 6.00 dig per game average, she posted a career-high 30 versus San Jose State on Oct. 4. The last Bulldog to tally a 30-dig match was Tricia Tuley, who had 31 vs. Sacramento State on Sept. 14, 1996. Collecting her first 30+ dig match of her career against the Spartans, Peters picked up her third 20-plus dig match against Nevada (22) a week later. In WAC play only, she is hitting .277 while averaging 3.83 kills per game and posting a league-best 4.88 digs per game. In overall action, she leads the team in digs (240, 3.53 dpg), is third on the team in kills (196, 2.88 kpg) and service aces (22, 0.32 sapg) and fourth in blocks (33, 0.49 bpg).
Rally-Scoring Records Set
In addition to Fenton establishing five new single-season rally-scoring school records this season, Keune owns the mark for most assists in a four-game match (73 vs. San Jose State, Oct. 4) while Peters owns the record for most digs in a four-game match (30 vs. San Jose State, Oct. 4).
In the NCAA Statistics
In the fifth release of the NCAA Division I volleyball statistics (Oct. 5), Fenton was listed in kills per game for the fifth straight week as she appeared at No. 19 (347, 5.26). She is one of just eight players in the nation to have tallied at least 345 kills (min. 3.50 kpg) as of Oct. 5. Keune made her second showing and was ranked 25th in assists per game (12.82, Oct. 5). In the first release of the national statistics (Sept. 7), the Bulldogs ranked No. 22 in assists per game (15.14) and tied for No. 24 in W/L (6-1, .857). Fenton appeared at No. 26 in kills per game (145, 5.18 kpg) while Keune was tied for No. 22 in assists per game (366, 13.07 apg).
About the Losses
Of Fresno State's four losses on the year, three have come by teams which were either ranked or became ranked right after the Bulldogs played them. With two Top 25 losses to No. 19 Long Beach State (3-2) and No. 2 Hawai'i (3-0), the 'Dogs also dropped a four-game match to the University of San Diego, which jumped into the Top 25 the very next week at No. 21. The lone non-ranked loss came from Idaho State (3-2) in the second match of the season during the Fresno State Invitational.

In the WAC's overall stats, Flunder is ninth in kills per game and 10th in hitting. Looking to dispel a nine-match drought, UTEP will travel to Nevada on Thur., Oct. 16, before coming to Fresno State this weekend. The Miners opened the season at 5-6 before enduring its current longest losing streak of the season. UTEP is hitting .152 as a team while averaging 13.32 kills, 18.04 digs and 2.08 blocks per game. In the overall WAC statistics, the Miners are the second-best digging team in the conference by being one of two teams with better than an 18.00 dig per game average. UTEP is being led offensively by a pair of outside 200-kill and dig leaders in freshman Nina Reeves (249, 3.36 kpg; 229 digs, 3.09 dpg) and two-time all-WAC and senior Jennifer Abbruzzese (239, 3.27 kpg; 279 digs, 3.82 dpg).
