FRESNO, Calif. - After opening the first part of the month on the road, the Fresno State volleyball team returned home and collected a four-game Western Athletic Conference victory over Boise State.
Beating the Broncos, 30-19, 30-17, 26-30 and 30-19, Fresno State improved to 15-4 overall and 5-1 in league play while the Broncos fell to 5-16 overall and 1-6 in conference.
Fresno State, which utilized 14 of its 17-player squad, had season-high marks in block assists (26) and total blocks (18) in the victory. Hitting .355 in the match, the Bulldogs had at least one dig from each player that participated.
Leading the charge was senior middle blocker Carrie Hartt. As the only Bulldog to post a double-double, she tallied a match- and season-high 10 blocks to go along with 14 kills while hitting .478 (14-3-23). The 10 blocks marked her fourth career match in which she netted 10 or more and the double-double was her first of the season and fourth of her career. In addition, Hartt moved into a tie for No. 10 all-time at Fresno State in career block solos with 55 and shares the spot with former Bulldog Kara McKeown (55, 1997-98).
Junior outside hitter Kristen Fenton tied for match-high honors in kills with 15 while junior middle blocker Tiffany Bishop chipped in 11 kills and five blocks while hitting a match-best .625 (11-1-16). Also, junior libero Tina Brennan tied for match-high honors in digs with 11.
Boise State, which is enduring a six-match losing streak, also had three players post 10 or more kills. Sarah Johnson led the Broncos with 15 kills while Jackie Stroud had a team-high 11 digs.
In game one, Fresno State hit a blistering .464 (16-3-28) as Hartt was perfect from the floor with a 1.000 (5-0-5) hitting percentage and four blocks. In game two, the Bulldogs hit better than .400 (.433) once again as Fenton and senior outside hitter Stefanie Taelman each had four kills and the 'Dogs outblocked BSU, 5-0.
In game three, Fresno State sent 10 players into the game. Fenton picked up five kills for the Bulldogs and sophomore middle blocker Andrea Thrower had four to go along with three blocks. BSU, which hit .049 in game two, hit .243 and kept itself into the match by blocking (3 to 4) and serving up three aces (3-1). In game four, Bishop jump-started the offense by hitting 1.000 from the floor (5-0-5) while she and Taelman collected three blocks a piece.
"We were able to put in different people and get ourselves in a better position," Fresno State volleyball head coach Lindy Vivas said. "There was different chemistry out on the floor at times but we got good playing experience.
"We need to continue to play solid, fundamental volleyball," Vivas added. "We need to serve and pass very well; we need to play solid and minimize errors. We're working on better floor defense and having vision to see and anticipate a play before it happens is key for success."
Fresno State wraps up its brief October home stand when the Bulldogs host UTEP on Sat., Oct. 18, 7:00 p.m.
