FRESNO, Calif.- California's defense did just enough to keep Fresno State off the scoreboard, blanking the Bulldogs 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in a Pac-10 contest at Bulldog Stadium.
The Golden Bears (6-6-2, 2-2-1 Pac-10) outshot the 'Dogs by a 15-9 margin and turned in an impressive defensive effort to avoid a Fresno State upset. More importantly, seven of Cal's 15 shots were on goal, compared to just two for Fresno State.
The Bulldogs (4-9-0, 1-4-0 Pac-10) were coming off their first conference win of the year in a 2-0 shutout of Stanford on Friday but failed to find the net on Sunday afternoon. Midfielder Chris Murphy led Fresno State with four shots in the loss, one of which was on frame.
Cal opened the scoring at 22:39 when Yohei Fukuda connected on a cross from Mike Munoz for a 1-0 lead. The Golden Bears held a 7-5 edge in shots during the first period.
Both teams had scoring opportunities to open the second period but neither could convert until the 70th minute. That's when Cal's Munoz punched in a loose ball following an assist from Carl Acosta on a dead ball restart.
Fresno State goalkeeper Eric Kronberg tallied five saves in the loss, playing the entire 90:00.
The Bulldogs will not have to wait long for a rematch with the Golden Bears. The two teams meet again on Friday, Oct. 25 in Berkeley at 2 p.m. Fresno State then plays at Stanford on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m.
