Bulldogs Travel to Louisiana Tech and SMU
The Fresno State volleyball team, after a two-date homestand this month, is back on the road for the sixth time in eight weeks. The Bulldogs will play two Eastern Division opponents in Western Athletic Conference play this week when they travel to Louisiana Tech on Thur., Oct. 23, 5:00 p.m. (PDT), and SMU on Sat., Oct. 25, 2:00 p.m. (PDT). Now playing 15 of its first 22 matches on the road, Fresno State is 10-3 away from home as it's off to battle the Lady Techsters and one of the nation's top digging teams in the Mustangs.
'Dogs Receive National Votes
The Bulldogs received votes for the sixth time on the year in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 today. Receiving votes for the fourth straight week, the 'Dogs picked up 10 points on for a No. 36 listing. Last week, the Bulldogs tallied the most points on the year (16).
The Series
Fresno State leads the all-time series versus Louisiana Tech and SMU by a combined 11-0 mark. Against Louisiana Tech, the Bulldogs have only squared off twice previously as the 'Dogs posted a four-game victory last year at home after sweeping the Lady Techsters in Ruston, La., Oct. 5, 2001. Fresno State has tangled with Louisiana Tech in WAC regular-season play, only. Against SMU, the Bulldogs have captured all nine contests. With the two squads last squaring off in the first round of the WAC Volleyball Championship Tournament on Nov. 22, 2002 in Reno, Nev., Fresno State last played the Mustangs in regular-season action on Oct. 17, 2002 in Fresno, Calif., as the Bulldogs won, 3-1. In WAC regular-season play, the Bulldogs are 8-0 with five sweeps versus SMU. The two programs first met on Oct. 3, 1997 in Fresno, Calif., and the Bulldogs collected a 3-1 win.
The Schedule
Opening the year by playing 10 of its first 13 matches on the road, Fresno State will end up playing 16 away to 11 home in 2003. In the first three months the Bulldogs will have played 15 road matches while appearing in the North Gym just seven times. Fresno State closes out the regular season by playing at home in four of its final five contests. Compared to 2002, the Bulldogs' schedule featured 17 road games to 13 at home. In the last two years combined, not counting postseason play for 2003, the Bulldogs will have played nine more road contests (33-24). Since 2000, Fresno State will have played 60 road games, to just 51 home games. Being a road warrior proved favorable for the 'Dogs in 2002 as they went 12-5 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
Next Month
Fresno State will close out the regular-season by playing four of its final five matches at home, including a match against Hawai'i to christen the Save Mart Center on Sun., Nov. 9, 12:00 p.m. The Bulldogs open November with a 4:00 p.m. match against Nevada before entertaining San Jose State (Thur., Nov. 8), the Rainbow Wahine and CS Northridge (Wed., Nov. 12). The 'Dogs close out regular-season and WAC play at Boise State on Sat., Nov. 15.
Head Coach Lindy Vivas
In her 13th season as head coach of the Bulldog volleyball program, Lindy Vivas (UCLA, 1980) collected her 300th career win in the season opener against New Mexico on Aug. 29. Recording her 100th Western Athletic Conference win against Rice on Sept. 25 and posting the programs 200th overall league victory versus Nevada on Oct. 11, Vivas garnered her third WAC Coach of the Year honors last fall. Vivas has led the Bulldog volleyball program to seven 20-win seasons while advancing to postseason play six times. With three NCAA Tournament appearances, including two in the last five years, her 2002 squad established the school's best win percentage (.767, 23-7) while advancing to the WAC Tournament Semis for the second straight season. Averaging 19 wins a year, Vivas owns a 13-year record of 243-151 (.617) at Fresno State and a 17-year career mark of 315-211 (.600). The Bulldogs, who are 110-50 (.688) at home under Vivas, have gone 27-5 (.844) in the North Gym the past three seasons. Vivas has coached eight AVCA all-region/all-district winners and 24 all-WAC picks (27 overall). Leading the 'Dogs to all five WAC Volleyball Tournaments (1996-98, 2001-02), she directed the program to its best start (16-2) and third-most wins (23) in 2002. Opening the 2003 season at No. 44, Vivas has directed the program to four of its five preseason listings.
Week 8 in Review: 'Dogs Collect a Pair of Four-Game Victories

They also have won six of their first seven conference matches for the fifth time overall (2003, '02, '01, 1992 and '84) and four times in WAC play (2003, '02, '01 and 1992) ... Fresno State opened the first week of conference play by going 2-0 as well as going 2-0 in the first week of WAC action ... That marked the 11th time overall and sixth under Vivas that the Bulldogs opened league play perfectly and the fifth time overall and under Vivas that they opened WAC play perfectly ... At 16-4, Fresno State has won at least 16 of its first 20 matches for the second time in school history and has done so for the second consecutive year (16-4 in 2003 and 18-2 in '02) ... In the years that Fresno State advanced to the NCAA's, the 1991 and '98 teams went 15-5 in its first 20 before last year's team went 18-2; the 1984 team opened at 14-6 ... In the years that Fresno State won 10 of its first 13 matches, six Bulldog teams went on to post 20-win campaigns (1991, '95, '96, '97, '98 and 2002) ... Of those six, four went on to postseason play (1991, '98 and 2002 at NCAA's; 1995 at National Invitational Volleyball Championship) ... Against their West Region opponents, the Bulldogs are 9-2 as they own wins over Cal Poly, UC Riverside, Northern Arizona, Rice, Tulsa, San Jose State, Nevada, Boise State and UTEP and a loss to No. 19 Long Beach State and No. 2 Hawai'i.
All-American in the Making?
Fresno State has had only one All-American in school history and that individual is current assistant coach Ruth Lawanson. Named to the 2002 AVCA All-West Region team, junior outside hitter Kristen Fenton (Marysville, Mich.) is putting up exceptional numbers this season. Already tallying just over 400 kills and currently averaging 5.15 kills per game, she has appeared in all six weeks of the NCAA Division I statistics in kills per game and currently ranks No. 18 (5.26 kpg). One of four players in the WAC averaging better than 5.00 kills per game in overall play, Fenton has been a four-time all-tournament pick this fall, including two MVP honors. As the Bulldogs' top kill leader in 19 of 20 matches and hitting better than .300 all season, she has had 20 or more kills in 13 matches, including her first career 30-kill match with 31 against then No. 19 Long Beach State; she became the first Bulldog in four years to tally a 30-kill performance. The two-time WAC Player of the Week has already set five school rally-scoring records this season. She owns the record for most kills in three (22 vs. Tulsa) and five (31 vs. #19 Long Beach State) games. Fenton holds the record for most total attempts in four (63 vs. Nevada) and five (76 vs. #19 Long Beach State) games. She also holds the mark for hitting percentage in a four-game match, 15-19 attempts (.667, 13-1-18 vs. New Mexico). In WAC games, only, Fenton is one of four players averaging better than 5.30 kills per game.
Eyeing 1,000 Career Kills/Single-Season Kill Mark
Eclipsing the 900-career kill plateau three weeks ago, Fenton has a current career total of 959 career kills. Now just 41 kills shy of being just the ninth Bulldog to amass 1,000+ career kills, Fenton is on pace to become the second-fastest Bulldog to reach the historic milestone. She is averaging 3.69 kills per game (260 games/72 matches) in her career - a mark that currently ranks No. 5 all-time at Fresno State. While currently hitting at a career mark of .290 (No. 6 all-time), Fenton has a .334 hitting percentage on the season and is one of eight players in school history to hit at least .300 in a season (last year she finished at .301 to rank No. 6). In addition, she is flirting with the school's single-season hitting percentage record (school record is .345 by middle blocker Tera Booker, 1995) and is challenging the school's all-time single-season kill and kill per game record, which was set by Paola Paz-Soldan in 1991 (630, 5.60 kpg, 112 games in 34 matches). With a streak of 36 consecutive double-figure kill matches dating back to last season (663 kills in 138 games for a 4.80 kill per game average), Fenton is averaging 20.10 kills per match (5.15 kpg) this fall. With 402 kills already collected in 20 matches (recorded 403 in 29 matches a year ago), she is 84 kills shy of ranking No. 10 all-time at Fresno State for most kills in a season (486, Tricia Tuley in 1994) and 86 of tying current assistant coach Ruth Lawanson's No. 9 all-time single-season kill mark (488, 1984). While 88 kills shy of being just the seventh Bulldog to tally a 500-kill season, Fenton's current 5.15 kill per game average ranks second-best in single-season school history.
Hartt Named WAC Player of the Week
Senior middle blocker Carrie Hartt (Manteca, Calif.) was selected WAC Player of the Week today and for the first time in her career after guiding Fresno State to a 2-0 home record in conference play last week. With Fresno State being honored for the third time on the year, Hartt collected 19 total blocks for a 2.38 block per game average and hit a team-best .339 to go along with three service aces while finishing second on the team in kills (29, 3.62 kpg) last week. With a season-high seven block assists versus UTEP, she had a career-best four block solos and a season-high 10 total blocks against Boise State. Hartt also collected her first career 10+ dig match and her first career double-double of kills/digs (fourth career double-double overall) versus the Miners. As the only Bulldog to collect a double-double in both matches played, Hartt had 14 kills and 10 blocks versus Boise State while posting 15 kills and 10 digs against UTEP. She narrowly missed a triple-double against the Miners as she fell a block short (15 kills-10 digs-9 blocks) and would have been the first Bulldog to post one in four years. With the six block solos netted last week, Hartt moved into the No. 10 spot all-time at Fresno State with 57 career block solos. As a Bulldog, she also moved up to No. 4 all-time in career blocks per game (1.13), No. 8 in total blocks (271) and No. 9 in block assists (214). Hartt has a current streak of four double-figure kill matches for the third time on the year. In this streak, she is averaging 15.75 kills per match and 3.94 kills per game while hitting .291 (63-22-141) with team-highs of 12 service aces (0.75 sapg) and 28 total blocks (1.75 bpg) in 16 games played. In her last six matches, Hartt is averaging 12.83 kills per match and 3.50 kills per game while hitting .289 (77-25-180) with team-highs of 14 service aces (0.64 sapg) and 33 total blocks (1.50 bpg) in 22 games played. At the net and dating back to last season, she has tallied 183 blocks in the last 38 matches for a 4.82 block per match average and a 1.32 block per game mark in 139 games. On the season, Hartt leads the Bulldogs in total blocks (80) and block assists (61) while sharing top honors in block solos (19). She is second in blocks per game (1.13), kills (243), kills per game (3.42), service aces (28, 0.39 sapg) and points scored (320.5) while third in hitting (.278).
Other Bulldog Top Performances
Having led the Bulldogs in kills in 19 of 20 matches, Fenton totaled 34 kills for a 4.25 kill per game average in the two victories last week ... Nationally-ranked in kills per game for six straight weeks, she scored 20 or more points in a match for the 15th time on the year ... Fenton tied her season-high in assists with four while picking up her 12th double-double against UTEP ... Sophomore setter Robyn Keune (Ventura, Calif.) dished out 78 assists to move her season total to 972 ... She is 28 assists shy of becoming the seventh Bulldog to post a 1,000-assist season ... While not setting, Keune set a career-high in block assists (5) and total blocks (5) against UTEP ... Nationally-ranked in assists per game three times this fall, she recorded her eighth 10-plus dig match of the season against the Miners ... Freshman outside hitter Tuli Peters (Laie, Hawaii), who has led the WAC in digs for conference games, only, in two of the last three weeks, is averaging 13.44 digs per game and 3.56 digs per game in her last 18 matches ... She has recorded double-figure dig performances in 15 of her last 18 while tallying 242 digs in 68 games ... Peters is one of three Bulldogs to post at least 200 kills and, along with Fenton, are the only two to have at least 200 kills and digs to date ... Junior libero Tina Brennan (Woodinville, Wash.) had a pair of double-figure dig matches last week ... With 10-plus dig matches in five of the last seven, she is averaging 11.57 digs per match and 3.12 digs per game (81 in 26 games) ... Brennan, who is second on the team in digs (244), has totaled 726 career digs and is 274 shy of 1,000 ... She, along with Fenton, who has 709 career digs, will race each other to become the sixth Bulldog to post 1,000 career digs ... Senior outside hitter Stefanie Taelman (Gavere, Belgium) already is having a career year and has overcome injury-plagued seasons in 2001 and '02 ... Seven kills shy of her 200th career kill, she notched a career-best six block assists and total blocks versus Boise State ... Hitting better than .300 in four matches this season, Taelman picked up her eighth double-figure dig match against UTEP ... In her last four outings, she is hitting .302 with 24 digs and 11 total blocks.
Setting a Standard
Keune was pushed into a starting role this season after joining the Bulldogs as a walk on last fall. With the loss of AVCA All-West Region Honorable Mention setter Whitney Arena, Keune has responded beautifully by running the 'Dogs offense without skipping a beat from a year ago. With the Bulldogs hitting .259 on the year, Keune has totaled 972 assists for a 12.46 assist per game average. Nationally-ranked three times in assists per game this season, she currently ranks No. 29 (12.77) in the latest NCAA stats (Oct. 12). By tallying 78 assists last week, Keune is 28 assists shy of becoming the seventh Bulldog setter to record at least a 1,000-assist season. She would join Arena, Diann Aufdermaur, Brenda Gregersen, Jenny Streltzoff, Kieran O'Leary and Traci Sliester as setters to post a 1,000-assist season and it would mark the 13th time in Fresno State single-season history for a Bulldog to collect 1,000 or more assists.
WAC Freshman of the Year Candidate?
Having led the WAC in digs per game (league games, only) in two of the last three weeks, Peters has made her impact felt as a freshman. In the first week of league play with a 6.00 dig per game average, she posted a career-high 30 versus San Jose State on Oct. 4. The last Bulldog to tally a 30-dig match was Tricia Tuley, who had 31 vs. Sacramento State on Sept. 14, 1996. Collecting her first 30+ dig match of her career against the Spartans, Peters picked up her third 20-plus dig match against Nevada (22) a week later. One of three Bulldogs to total at least 200 kills, she, along with Fenton, are the only two 'Dogs to have at least 200 kills and digs on the season. In WAC play only, she is hitting .263 while averaging 2.62 kills per game and posting a 3.88 digs per game. In overall action, she leads the team in digs (255, 3.36 dpg) and is third on the team in kills (209, 2.75 kpg) and service aces (25, 0.33 sapg) and fourth in blocks (38, 0.40 bpg).
Rally-Scoring Records Set
In addition to Fenton establishing five new single-season rally-scoring school records this season, Keune owns the mark for most assists in a four-game match (73 vs. San Jose State, Oct. 4) while Peters owns the record for most digs in a four-game match (30 vs. San Jose State, Oct. 4).
In the NCAA Statistics
In the sixth release of the NCAA Division I volleyball statistics (Oct. 12), Fenton was listed in kills per game for the sixth straight week as she appeared at No. 18 (368, 5.26 kpg). Keune made her third showing and was ranked 29th in assists per game (894, 12.77, while the team appeared for the second time in assists per game overall (No. 30, 14.76 apg) in the Oct. 12 release. In the first release of the national statistics (Sept. 7), the Bulldogs ranked No. 22 in assists per game (15.14 apg) and tied for No. 24 in W/L (6-1, .857). Fenton appeared at No. 26 in kills per game (145, 5.18 kpg) while Keune was tied for No. 22 in assists per game (366, 13.07 apg).
About the Losses
Of Fresno State's four losses on the year, three have come by teams which were either ranked or became ranked right after the Bulldogs played them. With two Top 25 losses to No. 19 Long Beach State (3-2) and No. 2 Hawai'i (3-0), the 'Dogs also dropped a four-game match to the University of San Diego, which jumped into the Top 25 the very next week at No. 21. The lone non-ranked loss came from Idaho State (3-2) in the second match of the season during the Fresno State Invitational.

Going 10-1 in its last 11 matches, SMU opened the year at 5-4 and have since gone to post one of its best starts in school history. Nationally-ranked in digs per game in five of the last six weeks, the Mustangs are currently ranked No. 6 with an 18.91 dig per game average (Oct. 12).
