FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State secured a berth in the 2003 WAC Tournament and remained unbeaten at home with a 4-0 shutout of Tulsa on Thursday night at Bulldog Stadium.
The Bulldogs, who have qualified for the conference postseason tournament every season since the inception of the program, improve to 7-7-2 overall on the year and 4-3-0 in the WAC. Tulsa falls to 4-11-1 and 1-6-0 in league play.
In what has become a trend at home matches, Fresno State got on the board early and continued with an onslaught of scoring opportunities. In five home matches this year, the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 19-4.
Tonight was no different, with sophomore Katri Nokso-Koivisto (Kokkola, Finland) netting her fifth goal of the year at the 7:35 mark following an assist from sophomore Kortney Lewis.
Fresno State would add another right before halftime when junior Lisa Esteves (Escalon, Calif.) fed senior Erin Sayegusa (Honolulu, Hawaii), who slipped past the Tulsa defense and beat TU netminder Kelly Wilson one-on-one.
The Bulldogs outshot Tulsa 20-3 on the evening, including a 12-0 edge in the second half. That consistent offense yielded two second half scores from sophomores Koleen Anderson (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) and Eriko Yoshiki (Satte City, Japan).
Anderson was the recipient of a Nokso-Koivisto pass and she headed the ball into the net for a 3-0 lead. Yoshiki tacked on her fifth goal of the season in the 70th minute, punching in a loose ball after a deflection to round out the scoring.
Nokso-Koivisto led all players with six shots, while three different Golden Hurricane players collected one each.
Fresno State now turns its attention to Rice (7-7-1, 4-2-0 WAC) on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The regular season finale will include senior day festivities.
