Four Bulldogs Reach Third Round at Women's Tennis Regionals

FRESNO, Calif. - Four Bulldogs -- Lucia Sainz, Chloe Carlotti, Vlatka Jovanovic and Lucia Tallo -- all won their matches to advance to the third round at the ITA Northwest Women's Tennis Regionals, being played this weekend at Stanford.
Carlotti and Tallo, both seeded in the singles bracket, both received first round byes and needed only to win once. But Sainz and Jovanovic, as unseeded players, both won twice.
A sophomore, Sainz opened with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Gabriela Ruiz of San Francisco. She followed that up with a tougher match, but a win nonetheless. This triumph came over 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 over Zorana Roganovic of Washington State.
Also a sophomore, Jovanovic cruised in both of her matches. She opened with a straight-set victory over Lorena Arias of Washington State, then backed that up with an equally easy 6-1, 6-2 over Cristina Rivieccio of Sacramento State.
Carlotti and Tallo both won their matches in straight sets. Carlotti, seeded second, won her first singles match of the fall season by breezing past Kelly Leathers of Santa Clara 6-1, 6-3. Tallo, the 13th seed, started slowly but picked up her game in the second set in a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win over Ester Bak of Oregon.
Three other Fresno State players participated in the annual event, which features a 110-player singles draw. Kathrin Winterhalter received a default in her first match, but in the second round she fell to 16th-seeded Emilia Anderson of Stanford 6-4, 6-2.
Megan Hanner, a freshman on this year's team, lost her first round contest to Anna Leksinska of Oregon 7-5, 6-1. Also going down to defeat in her first round match was Courtney Jantz. She fell to Sanja Indic of Portland 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles, the team of Winterhalter and Sainz continue to roll. They won their match over Washington State's Zorana Roganovic and Orsolya Sallai 8-3. Winterhalter and Sainz, seeded third in the tournament, are 10-0 this fall.
