FRESNO, Calif- Having scored just four goals through its last six games (four of those shutout losses), Fresno State returned home to Bulldog Stadium on Friday night looking to turn things around offensively.
The Bulldogs did just that, scoring a season-high five goals in a 5-2 victory over Boise State to snap a four-match losing streak.
Five different players found the net for the 'Dogs, who enjoyed their best offensive game since a 7-0 shutout of Weber State on Sept. 17, 2000.
Fresno State (4-6-2, 1-2-0 WAC) outshot Boise State 17-8 in the game, with 10 of those coming in the first half. Senior Erin Sayegusa (Honolulu, Hawaii) recorded a goal and two assists, while sophomore Barbara Davis (Fresno, Calif.) notched two assists.
Boise State held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks but that was about it, as the Bulldogs led 4-0 until the Broncos registered their first goal in the 83rd minute.
Sophomore Kortney Lewis (Visalia, Calif.) scored her fifth goal of the season at the 20:46 mark, taking a cross from Davis and firing it past the keeper for a 1-0 lead. Fellow sophomore Katri Nokso-Koivisto (Kokkola, Finland) gave the 'Dogs a 2-0 edge 13 minutes later when she blasted a shot into the upper left corner of the net, following an assist from Sayegusa.
Leading 2-0 at the half, Sayegusa scored her second goal of the year in the 51st minute. After taking a pass from Davis, the midfielder wheeled around the goalie and found herself open for a score.
Senior defender Kristyn Kellogg (Atascadero, Calif.) would score her first goal as a Bulldog just three minutes later for a 4-0 lead. Following a free kick from the top of the box, Sayegusa fed Kellogg, who beat a defender a chipped the ball inside the post for the game's fourth score.
Boise State would tack on two goals in the final 10 minutes of play, sandwiched around a score from Fresno State's Cortney Sobrero (Las Vegas, Nev.) at the 84:17 mark. Megan McCoy and Libby Johnson each found the net for the Broncos, with Kristin Hall netting an assist on the second score.
Fresno State was able to get all of its reserves in the contest during the second half. Among them sophomore defender Ashley Saibini (Reno, Nev.), who came through with an assist and senior goalkeeper Katy Klawitter (Clovis, Calif.), who played the final 12 minutes between the posts.
