Fresno State volleyball player Tina Brennan (Woodinville, Wash.) was named to her first Academic All-District VIII Team, as voted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), this morning.
A junior libero for the Bulldogs, Brennan was named to the six-member First Team All-District VIII Team, which encompasses the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and the province of British Columbia.
Majoring in liberal studies with a cumulative 4.0 GPA, Brennan has been an integral part of the Bulldogs' defense since her arrival in 2001.
This season she has started all 26 matches at the libero position and leads the team in digs (358) and digs per game (3.54). The four-time President's List (4.0) and Dean's List honoree tied her career mark with 27 digs in the Western Athletic Conference opener against Rice after setting the same mark against No. 7 UC Santa Barbara in the NCAA Tournament First Round last fall.
Establishing back-to-back 300-dig seasons, she has set or tied two rally scoring digging records this fall. Brennan tied her own mark set a year ago against the same team when she recorded 26 digs in the five-game victory over CS Northridge last night (26 vs. Matadors on Oct. 30, 2002 at Northridge). The 20-plus dig performance was her fifth of the season and eighth of her career.
Once owning the rally scoring record for digs in four games earlier in the year, she has set a new rally scoring record for digs in three-game matches when she tallied 17 versus No. 2 Hawai'i on Nov. 9 after putting up 17 against Louisiana Tech on Oct. 23.
The WAC Scholar-Athlete and WAC Freshmen All-Academic (2001) selection has posted a pair of eight double-figure dig matches this fall and currently has an eight-match streak of 10-plus digs in which she is averaging 17.13 digs per match and 5.27 digs per game (137 digs in 26 games).
Helping Fresno State receive votes in six of the 11 USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll this season, Brennan also is 71 shy of ranking No. 10 all-time at Fresno State for career digs and 160 digs shy of being the sixth Bulldog to total 1,000 career digs as she owns 840 career digs to date.
Brennan is the third Fresno State student-athlete to garner Academic All-District VIII honors this fall. She joins men's soccer player Ni?o Rivas (Lancaster, Calif.), a senior defender who was named first team with a 3.98 cumulative GPA in kinesiology-exercise science, and women's soccer player Katri Nokso-Koivisto (Kokkola, Finland), a sophomore forward who was named second team with a 3.77 cumulative GPA in health science. All three have been forwarded onto the national ballot for a chance to be selected as an Academic All-American.
