FRESNO, Calif. - Shantay Legans scored 27 points to lead three players in double figures as Fresno State topped the Gear Hog All-Stars 86-79 in an exhibition game Monday night at the Save Mart Center.
Legans' scoring outburst helped the Bulldogs survive a furious rally from Gear Hog, which trailed by as many as 18 early in the second half only to eventually take a one-point lead with 1:40 to play.
Former Fresno State standout Damon Jackson and former San Francisco player Shamell Stallworth had huge nights for the All-Stars. Jackson, a first-team All-WAC selection last year, scored a game-high 32 points, making 6 of his 14 attempts from beyond the arc. Stallworth added 28 and was 4-of-10 on three-pointers.
After taking a 67-56 lead with 8:08 remaining, Fresno State appeared to have the game in hand. But Gear Hog ripped off a 15-1 run to tie the score at 68-68. Jackson helped key the run with 10 points.
The All-Stars grabbed a 71-70 advantage with 3:42 to go, and the lead see-sawed back and forth the next five possessions. A pair of Jackson free throws tied it at 77-77 with 1:09 on the clock, but a three-point play by Legans at the other end gave Fresno State the lead for good.
The Bulldogs went 7-for-7 from the free throw line in the final minute of the game to help seal the win.
Fresno State was also paced by double-doubles from Mustafa Al-Sayyad and Jonathan Woods. Al-Sayyad posted 16 points and 11 rebounds while Woods had 15 and 11. For Woods, it was his second double-double in as many exhibition games.
The Bulldogs outrebounded EA Sports 49-35.
