FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's women's cross country team took fifth place at the WAC Championships hosted by San Jose State in Belmont, Calif. Running their fastest times ever, the Bulldogs jumped three spots from their eighth place team finish in 2002.
Senior Kara June was Fresno State's top finisher, placing sixth with a time of 17:43 in the 5K race. June ran the Crystal Springs Course 35 seconds faster at the WAC Championships than she did just over two months ago at the Bronco Invitational where her time was 18:18.
Sophomore Andrea Buckner, the apparent most improved runner on the team, took 1:18 off her previous time on the course to finish second on the team and 23rd overall. Her finish time at the WAC Championships was 18:47.
Finishing third for the Bulldogs was junior Courtney Stewart who took 39th with a time of 19:30.
Rounding out the top-five scoring runners were junior Nicolin Neal and senior Orelia Gonzalez who finished with identical times of 19:42.
Neal shaved 39 seconds off her previous time on the course and Gonzalez cut 33 seconds to finish 45th and 46th, respectively.
Fresno State's fifth place WAC finish is the best performance by the Bulldogs in four years under head coach Shannon Lieder.
Up next for the Bulldogs is the NCAA District 9 Regionals in Portland, Ore., on Nov. 15.
