POWAY, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Fresno State softball team belted out its frustration on the final day of the 13th Annual Campbell/Cartier Tournament when it mercy run-ruled New Mexico, 10-0 in five innings, this morning.
Highlighted by a three-run opposite field home run by freshman shortstop Christina Clark, Fresno State put together a seven run, six hit frame in the top of the third and added three runs in the fifth to wrap up tournament play with a 1-3 mark.
Striking out seven of the first 10 batters faced, sophomore All-America pitcher Jamie Southern (2-4) had her no-hit bid ended in the fourth on a bunt single up the third base side. Tossing a one-hitter, she struck out 10 for her fifth 10-strikeout game of the year.
Fresno State had four players with multiple-hit games. Junior right fielder Lori Hoffman went 3-3 with a run, walk and RBI. Senior catcher Pam West was 2-3 with a run, walk and two RBI while junior first baseman Monnaye Bernal went 2-4 with a double and three RBI. Junior designated player Shasta Lewis was 2-3 with a run.
Batting around nearly one and a half times in the top of the third, Hoffman led the inning off with a walk, followed by a single by Southern and a RBI single to left field by West. Bernal then roped a double over the New Mexico right fielder's head to knock in two. Putting in a new Lobo pitcher, sophomore second baseman Leticia Pacheco had a single up the middle before Lewis reached safely on a Lobo fielding error. After notching an out on the Bulldogs' number nine hitter, Clark rocketed an opposite field shot for a three-run home run; her third home run of the year. Junior center fielder Mitzi Ing was walked before Hoffman connected on the sixth hit of the inning with a shot to deep short.
In the fifth, Clark reached safely on an error by the Lobo shortstop. Ing sacrificed Clark to second. Hoffman singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw home to score Clark. Southern walked to put runners on first and second. With freshman Jamie Hamby in to pinch run for Southern, West drilled a shot that painted the left line to score Hoffman while Hamby advanced to third and West to second on the throw home. With the Bulldogs facing the third Lobo pitcher of the day, Bernal answered with a single to right field to knock in Hamby for the 10th run of the game.
Hoffman led the Bulldogs in tournament play as she hit .500 (7-14) with two runs, double, two walks, four RBI and a .571 slugging percentage. Southern, who posted a 1.02 ERA, had 34 strikeouts in 20.2 innings as opponents batted .127 against her.
Going into the last game of the tournament, Sacramento State was 4-0 while CS Northridge (3-1), Kansas (3-1) and San Diego State (4-1) each have one loss. Sacramento State can win the tournament outright if it defeats CS Northridge this afternoon.
The tournament was not a solid showing by the Top 25 teams as No. 4 Michigan went 2-3 and Fresno State was 1-3. Other final results from the tournament: Oregon (1-3), Central Florida (1-3), Loyola Marymount (2-3), New Mexico (1-4) and UC Santa Barbara (2-2).
Fresno State (2-7) is idle next week.
