Softball Completes Doubleheader Sweep Over Southern Utah

FRESNO, Calif. - Behind a 10-hit attack, the Fresno State softball team swept a doubleheader for the first time on the season when it notched an 8-4 win over Southern Utah in the night cap.
The Bulldogs received a solid pitching performance by senior right-hander Leslie Poole, who came into the game in the top of the first with two outs. Picking up the victory in relief, she allowed just four hits, one run and struck out four in 6.1 innings for her first win on the year.
Three Bulldogs had at least two hits in the night cap as freshman shortstop Christina Clark (2-4, run), senior right fielder Lori Hoffman (2-3, run, double, two RBI) and sophomore first baseman Jamie Southern (2-3, two runs, double, RBI) led the way.
Junior centerfielder Mitzi Ing had three RBI for the Bulldogs after going 1-3 and notching her first career triple.
Fresno State was down 3-0 after one half inning of play. Freshman right-hander Laura Ferreira was roughed up for three runs on four hits and had two strikeouts in 0.2 innings of work.
The Bulldogs battled back with a run in the bottom of the second before exploding for a five-run third and adding two more runs in the fourth.
In the second, Southern led the inning off with a walk. Ing, the fifth batter in the inning, hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Southern.
In the third, Fresno State scored five runs on five hits. Hoffman doubled to right center to knock in freshman left fielder Nicole Shan and Clark. With one out Southern doubled to left field to score pinch runner Daisy Gaynor. With two outs, Ing tripled to right center as sophomore second baseman Leticia Pacheco and Southern scored.
In the fourth, senior catcher Pam West singled to right field to knock in Shan, who led the inning off with a walk.
Fresno State (7-12) hits the road this week when it participates in the Kia Klassic. The Bulldogs meet No. 13 DePaul and Notre Dame in pool play on Thursday, March 13, at 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively. The 'Dogs then wrap up pool play with No. 3 Nebraska on Friday at 1:00 p.m.
