RUSTON, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team resumed Western Athletic Conference action when it traveled to Ruston, La., and picked up a 3-0 victory over Louisiana Tech in the first game of the league doubleheader.
The Bulldogs' No. 1 and No. 2 batters provided all the offense that the 'Dogs needed as they combined for all three hits and all three RBI.
Sophomore All-America right-hander Jamie Southern pitched two-hit ball, walked two and struck out a season-high 14 in the victory. She also notched her 10th shutout win while striking out 10 or more for the 12th time on the season. Southern also extends her streak to 59.1 innings without an earned run as she recorded her 50th career win.
Freshman shortstop Christina Clark set the tone early as she delivered the second pitch of the game over the 10-foot left center field fence for her 11th long ball on the year. She went 1-4 with a run and had two RBI.
Freshman third baseman Angelina Diaz had the other two hits and a RBI after going 2-3.
After Clark's home run put the Bulldogs on the board after one inning of play, Fresno State tacked on its final two in the second.
Junior first baseman Shasta Lewis led off with a walk. Senior catcher Pam West then reached safely on an error by the Lady Techster third baseman on a sacrifice attempt. Before sophomore second baseman Leticia Pacheco was out on strikes, Lewis and West advanced a base on a passed ball. Clark had a RBI ground out to the La Tech shortstop as Lewis scored. Diaz then beat out an infield hit to the La Tech shortstop to score West.
Southern, who gave up two hits in the second, set down 15 of the final 17 Lady Techsters and improved to 15-9 overall.
Lady Techster pitcher Marla Pinkston fell to 8-12 overall after giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits while walking three and striking out seven.
