TULSA, Okla. - When it comes down to one-run games, the Fresno State softball team continues to be snake-bitten in 2003.
The Bulldogs dropped their 11th one-run game on the year as Tulsa picked up a one-out RBI double in the bottom of the 10th for a 1-0 victory in the first game of the Western Athletic Conference twinbill.
Sophomore All-America pitcher Jamie Southern (15-10) had a no-hit bid end in the eighth with two outs. Striking out nine in the game, Southern got the first out in the tenth before allowing three consecutive hits, including the game-winning double by Tulsa shortstop Stacey Walkingstick.
Southern's streak of unearned runs ended at 68.1 innings as she suffered her first WAC loss on the season. The loss was just her second to 10 wins in her last 12 starts.
Southern, freshman designated player Elizabeth Pierce and sophomore second baseman Leticia Pacheco were the only Bulldogs to collect a hit.
Tulsa, which scored a run on four hits, led the bottom of the 10th off with a groundout. TU third baseman Crissy Strimple singled to left field and advanced to second on a dropped ball by Bulldog left fielder Nicole Shan. Golden Hurricane first baseman Katie Torres hit a laser shot off Bulldogs' third baseman Angelina Diaz's glove and reached first as the ball bounced away. With runners on first and second, Walkingstick doubled to left center on the first pitch offered by Southern.
Fresno State had a scoring opportunity in the seventh. Diaz was hit by pitch to lead the inning off. After TU pitcher Maren Genow (13-4) got the next two Bulldog batters out, Pierce singled to left field. With runners on first and second, Genow got junior center fielder Mitzi Ing to ground out and end the threat.
Fresno State goes to 23-19 overall and 4-3 in the WAC while Tulsa improved to 28-18 overall and 3-2 in the WAC.
