RENO, Nev. - It was a cool brisk and windy day but the Fresno State softball team came out red-hot as the Bulldogs notched a 10-0, 6 inning victory at Nevada in Western Athletic Conference play.
The Bulldogs scored 10 runs on 10 hits and committed one error while Nevada had one hit with two errors.
Sophomore All-American Jamie Southern notched her 12th shutout win and fifth one-hitter on the year as she improved to 18-10 overall. Southern, who gave up a lead off hit to the first Wolf Pack batter, struck out nine and faced just one batter over minimum as she sat down the final 18 batters.
The victory moved Southern into a tie for No. 10 all-time in WAC history in career wins (53) with Utah's Monica Jimenez (1994-97).
At the plate, Southern was just as productive after going 2-4 with three RBI.
Freshman third baseman Angelina Diaz (1-3, run, double, sacrifice) and junior right fielder Lori Hoffman (1-4) also had a multiple-RBI game after pick up two a piece.
Senior catcher Pam West (1-3) and junior first baseman Shasta Lewis (1-2, run) accounted for the final two RBI.
Fresno State scored two runs in the third, added five in the fifth and tacked on three in the sixth for its fourth mercy run-rule game on the year.
In the third, Shan led the inning off with a single to left before freshman shortstop drew a walk. Diaz sacrificed the runners to second and third before Southern hit a two-run single to right.
The fifth was nearly a repeat of the third. Shan led off with a single to left and Clark was walked for the second time of the game. Diaz advanced the runners before Hoffman hit a two-run single to center field. Southern then singled to right field before Pierce reached safely on a fielder's choice for a force out at third. With two outs, Lewis and West each responded with RBI singles to left field.
In the sixth, Shan led the inning off with a walk and reached second base safely on a wide throw by the Nevada third baseman as Clark reached safely on a fielder's choice. Diaz doubled to left center to knock in Shan and Clark. After Hoffman was induced into a groundout that advanced Diaz to third, Southern picked up a RBI on a groundout to short as Diaz crossed home plate.
Wolf Pack pitcher Candice Rainwater took the loss as she allowed 10 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits while walking three and striking out two to fall to 7-11 overall. Nevada leadoff batter and third baseman Annie Stevens record the lone hit after hitting a Texas-leaguer to left field to start the game
