FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team moved into a two-way tie for second place in the Western Athletic Conference race when it collected a 5-2 night cap victory against San Jose State this afternoon.
Sophomore All-America right-hander Jamie Southern recorded her second win of the day when she scattered five hits, walked three and struck out seven as she improved to 17-10 overall.
At the plate, it was the Southern-Clark show once again. Southern went 2-3 with a run, double and hit her fifth home run of the season. Clark went 3-4 with a run, two doubles, a stolen base and had three RBI.
The Bulldogs tallied a run in the second before adding two in the third and the fourth. San Jose State notched a run in the fifth and sixth.
In the second, Southern hit a leadoff home run when she drilled a 2-1 pitch to right center for her fifth long ball on the year.
In the third, sophomore second baseman Leticia Pacheco singled to center field. Before freshman left fielder Nicole Shan struck out swinging, Pacheco advanced to second on a wild pitch. Clark followed with a RBI double to left field as Pacheco scored. After freshman third baseman Angelina Diaz grounded out, Clark advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a RBI single to center field by junior designated player Lori Hoffman.
In the fourth, junior first baseman Shasta Lewis led off with a single to left field. With junior center fielder Mitzi Ing sacrificing Lewis to second, Pacheco singled to left field to put Bulldogs on the corners. After Shan flied out to center field, Clark hit her second double on the day with a shot to center field as both Lewis and Pacheco scored.
In the fifth, SJSU third baseman Veronica Ramos led the inning off with a walk. With pinch runner Marissa Sandez coming in to pinch run, the Spartans sacrificed Sandez to second. After Southern got the next SJSU batter out, first baseman Carlie Hill looped a two-out RBI single to shallow left field.
In the sixth, designated player Tara Hall walked to leadoff the inning. Southern got the next two Spartan batters out but another looper to shallow left by Ramos led to another San Jose State run.
In addition to Southern and Clark, Diaz (2-4), Lewis (2-3, run) and Pacheco (2-3, 2 runs) also had multiple-hit games for the Bulldogs.
