FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team suffered its first loss on the season when the Bulldogs dropped a five-game match to Idaho State on the second day of the 2003 Fresno State Invitational.
The Bulldogs, who battled inconsistencies during the match, fell to 1-1 overall after losing 30-28, 22-30, 30-27, 26-30 and 9-15 to the Bengals.
Fresno State's passing and hitting played a disappearing act during the match after the 'Dogs squandered a 2-1 lead. In the Bulldogs' defense, however, they played a bigger and stronger team in ISU as the Bengals relied on veteran performers.
Fresno State hit .189 to Idaho State's .330 while the Bengals outblocked (17-8) and outdug (88-67) the 'Dogs.
Junior outside hitter Kristen Fenton notched her fourth career 20-kill match when she tallied a team-high 22 while hitting .321 (22-4-56) with 12 digs and two blocks. Senior middle blocker Carrie Hartt (17 kills) and freshman outside hitter Tuli Peters (13 kills) also posted double-figure kill performances. Sophomore setter Robyn Keune had a career-best 61 assists in the losing effort
Idaho State (1-1) was led by two 20-kill performers. Outside hitter Ali Gorny, the eventual tournament most valuable player, posted a match-high 25 kills and added 17 digs and five blocks. Middle blocker Jennie James had 20 kills and hit .545 (20-2-33) with four digs and eight blocks. Middle blocker Kamie Olsen chipped in 16 kills and hit .625 (16-1-24) with eight blocks.
"Our passing was not in sync," Fresno State head volleyball coach Lindy Vivas said. "However, we had our chances to win and we didn't take advantage of the opportunities when presented. Their outside hitter (Gorny) always seemed to have the ball and ISU took full advantage of that strength."
Fresno State wraps up tournament play tonight with a 7:30 p.m. match against Cal Poly (2-0).
