KNOXVILLE, TN- No. 12 Tennessee used two second-half goals to pull away from Fresno State on Sunday afternoon for a 3-1 non-conference victory in front of 491 fans at the Lady Vol Soccer Complex.
The Lady Vols (2-0-0) held an 18-8 overall edge in total shots and controlled possession for the majority of the game.
Lyndsey Patterson gave Tennessee a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the opening half when she took a pass from Kristen Doukakis and weaved her way around the Bulldog defense for the game's first score.
Fresno State's (1-1-0) best chance for an early score came with just under two minutes left in the first period, as freshman Cortney Sobrero (Las Vegas, Calif.) had a one-on-one opportunity that was stopped by Tennessee goalkeeper Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart.
The Lady Vols closed out the first period with a 7-5 advantage in shots, with the Bulldogs recording three consecutive attempts of their own in the final three minutes.
Fresno State responded with a quick score to open the second half of play, evening the game at 1-1. Junior Lisa Esteves (Escalon, Calif.) and a Lady Vol defender got tangled up inside the goal box, resulting in a penalty kick for the 'Dogs. Sophomore Eriko Yoshiki (Satte City, Japan) then converted on the penalty kick for Fresno State's first score.
The Lady Vols had a penalty kick attempt of their own minutes later, but Bulldog freshman keeper Jeannette Paine (Kelowna, British Columbia) was able to make the stop.
Tennessee continued to apply pressure offensively and eventually took the lead in the 61st minute. Keeley Dowling blasted a shot past Fresno State's Paine for the go-ahead goal following a cross into the box from Ali Cristoph on a corner kick.
Kayla Lockaby added an insurance score for the Lady Vols at the 74:05 mark, connecting off an assist from Patterson.
Paine made four saves for the Bulldogs in goal, while Tennessee's Philips-Bosshart recorded three.
Fresno State now returns to Bulldog Stadium for its home opener against Sacramento State on Saturday at 7 p.m.
