MORAGA, Calif. - Fresno State scored three goals within the first 50 minutes and played solid enough defensively to earn a 3-1 non-conference victory at Saint Mary's on Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (3-1-1) were outshot 12-8 on the afternoon but made the most of their opportunities inside the penalty area.
"This is just a great win for us against a traditionally strong regional opponent," said Fresno State head coach Stacy Welp. "We executed well and were able to keep pressure out on the wings. I think this will give us some needed momentum heading into our game against California on Sunday."
Fresno State got on the board quickly in the first half when sophomore Kortney Lewis (Visalia, Calif.) scored her third goal of the year. After a thrown-in, freshman Rochelle Jagdeo (Vacaville, Calif.) crossed a pass over to the opposite side of the box for Lewis, who fired a shot past the keeper for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.
Saint Mary's got the equalizer later in the half, when Chelsea Montero scored unassisted at the 33:22 mark to make it 1-1.
However, the Bulldogs regained the lead in the 39th minute when Cortney Sobrero's (Las Vegas, Nev.) header put Fresno State up 2-1. Sobrero headed the ball into the net from the middle of the box following a chip pass from junior Barbara Davis (Fresno, Calif.).
Fresno State opened the second half by taking a 3-1 advantage on an unassisted score by sophomore Eriko Yoshiki (Satte City, Japan). Yoshiki found the net after beating several Gael defenders on a breakway during the 48th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Jeannette Paine (Kelowna, British Columbia) played well between the posts, making three saves.
Fresno State wraps up its three-match week on Sunday against No. 13 California in Berkeley at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs then return home next weekend for a non-conference contest against UC Riverside on Wednesday, Sept. 17.
