Cross Country Travels to Stanislaus Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. - STANISLAUS INVITATIONAL
The Bulldogs take to the road for the second weekend in a row to run in the Stanislaus Invitational in Turlock, Calif., on Saturday. Fresno State has taken first place at this meet the past two years. Last year Bulldog runners took first, second and fifth place individually. The Stanislaus Invitational will be Fresno State's first 6K race of the season.
BRONCO INVITATIONAL RESULTS
Fresno State completed its official season opener at the Bronco Invitational in Belmont, Calif., on Saturday, Aug. 30. The Bulldogs took fifth place out of 10 teams. Senior Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) repeated last year's fifth place showing, but ran the 5K race 12 seconds slower. Sophomore Andrea Buckner (Anaheim, Calif.) came in second on the team and 35th overall with a time of 20:05. Junior Corina Mendoza (Sanger, Calif.) finished just a second behind Buckner, coming in 36th. Stanford took the team title with a combined score of 17 points. Santa Clara came in second with 54 points and Cal Poly was third with 84 points. Gonzaga finished just three points ahead of Fresno State with 134.
FRESNO STATE WATERMELON RUN
The 38th annual Fresno State Watermelon Run brought in nearly 250 competitors Saturday, Aug. 30. Participants ran in one, two or four-mile races. The highest number of runners (143) competed in the two-mile race. A top runner on Fresno State's men's cross country and track teams least year, Roosevelt Cook, claimed first place in the four-mile run with a time of 19:46. Cook also won the one-mile run in 4:57.
2002 POST-SEASON RESULTS
Kara June was the lone Fresno State competitor for the women's cross country team at the NCAA District 9 Regionals. There she ran a 6K in 22:56 which placed her 49th out of 189 runners. Her time was 40 seconds faster than her sophomore regional's time of 23:36. The women's cross country team took eighth out of 10 teams at the WAC Championships in Dallas. Rice won the women's team title with 68 points. The Bulldogs finished with 165 points. In traditional form, Fresno State's top two finishers were Kara June and Gutierrez-Nunez. June finshed 12th overall with a time of 18:27 and Gutierrez-Nunez finished 31st with a time of 19:24. The second and third place teams were Tulsa and Nevada with 85 and 87 points respectively. The Bulldogs took seventh place at the WAC Championships in 2001.
