Volleyball Defeats Georgetown in Tournament Opener

SACRAMENTO - The Fresno State volleyball team opened the Sacramento State Invitational with a four-game victory (30-22, 30-17, 28-30, 30-21) over Georgetown earlier this afternoon to improve to 3-1 on the season.
In the first meeting between the two schools, the Bulldogs won every statistical category as they tallied a season-best 72 kills while serving up nine aces and collecting 11 blocks against the Hoyas.
Junior outside hitter Kristen Fenton, who has led the Bulldogs in kills in all four matches played to date, equaled her season-best in kills (22) while posting her third 20-kill match and double-double on the year. Hitting .438 (22-4-39) in the match, Fenton has strung together three straight 20-kill matches this season.
Also posting a double-double for the Bulldogs was freshman outside hitter Tuli Peters, who set a new season-best mark in kills (16) and digs (13) while hitting .243 (16-7-37).
With Fenton posting a match-high in kills and Peters in digs, senior middle blocker Carrie Hartt chipped in 13 kills and tied for match-high honors in blocks (4). Junior libero Tina Brennan notched her third straight 10-dig match (10) while junior middle blocker Tiffany Bishop hit a season-best .438 (8-1-16) with four blocks.
For Georgetown (1-3), which hit .203 (55-24-153), the Hoyas were spearheaded by Ashley Lancaster (20 kills) and Sara Albert (18 kills).
Hitting .319 (72-21-160) in the match, Fresno State hit better than .400 in the first two games (.486 and .457) and committed just four errors while pounding out 37 kills in 70 attempts. Fenton totaled 10 kills and Peters had nine in the first two games
The Bulldogs had to play from behind in game three. Trailing by as many as five points three different times before tying the game at 21-21 and 22-22, Georgetown closed out the game with a 8-6 run and held Fresno State to a .163 hitting percentage as the 'Dogs absorbed the loss. Fenton led the way with five kills while Lancaster tallied nine of her 20.
In game four, Fresno State hit .234 as it put a six (19-13), eight (24-16) and 10 point (28-18) gap between itself and Georgetown before closing out the game with a win. Fenton picked up seven kills and three blocks while Bishop had five.
Fresno State (3-1) will meet Sacramento State (1-3) tonight at 7:30 p.m. The Hornets opened tournament play against UC Riverside (2-3) and were swept (30-20, 30-25, 30-24).
