FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State tries to get back on the winning track Saturday against Tulsa. The Bulldogs (9-7, 5-2 WAC) have lost their last two and have fallen out of first place in the conference for the first time under Ray Lopes. They are also trying to avoid a three-game WAC losing streak, something that has happened only once since 1995. Meanwhile, the Golden Hurricane (6-9, 2-4) are stumbling as well, having dropped five of their last seven games, all by nine points or less.
Tulsa leads the all-time series 5-4, a record which does not include four Fresno State victories that were vacated due to the Bulldogs' use of an ineligible player from 1998-00. The teams split their two meetings last year, with each winning on their home court. Fresno State is officially a perfect 4-0 at home all-time against Tulsa, including a 74-65 win in the WAC lid-lifter last year.
The Bulldogs currently stand at 5-4 in their own building, including the program's first three-game home losing streak since January 1995. What's been the most maddening is how Fresno State is losing these games - in the waning seconds and by very close margins. Coming into this season, the Bulldogs had been 116-21 at home from 1995-03, including a 14-1 mark a year ago.
