Swimming Splits Double Dual

LOS ANGELES - Junior Melissa Johnson won the 50, 100 and 200 free events to lead Fresno State to a 131-127 victory over Loyola Marymount Friday at Burns Center. The Bulldogs were also edged by Cal Poly 133-128 to come away with a split in the double dual. LMU registered a 132-127 win over the Mustangs to earn its first dual meet win of the year.
The Bulldogs ran their record to 3-6 while the Mustangs are now 1-4 and the Lions improved to 1-9 on the year.
Johnson swam the 50 free in a team season best time of 24.48 and clocked times of 53.33 in the 100 free and 1:54.47 in the 200 free. The Vacaville, Calif., native now has a team leading 14 top-three finishes this season including nine first-place results.
Six personal season best times were established by the Bulldogs at the meet including two by sophomore Nika Nakamoto who won the 100 and 200 fly events. Nakamoto turned in a career best mark of 2:13.16 in the 200 fly and touched the wall in 1:01.42 in the 100 fly.
Fresno State notched 20 top-three finishes including wins in eight of the meet's 14 events against Loyola Marymount. In addition, the Bulldogs recorded 22 top-three finishes against Cal Poly with seven first place results.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, Feb. 7, when they wrap up their regular season schedule at conference rival San Jose State. The meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
