FRESNO, Calif. - In conjunction with One by One Leaders, Fresno State student-athletes are raising awareness for early childhood education. The Bulldogs are getting involved by collecting children's books (age's kindergarten through third grade) for the inaugural ReadFresno Drive.
Already collecting books on their own, the Fresno State Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) is hosting a book drive on Fri., Nov. 12, at Bulldog Stadium, prior to the start of the Fresno State-Hawai'i football game. Representatives from all Bulldogs' sports teams will be collecting children's book at the four main entrances into Bulldog Stadium from 6:15 p.m. until 7:45 p.m.
In addition, for those who wish to drop off children's books outside of Friday's event may do so until Nov. 19 by stopping by the Student-Athlete Services office, located in the North Gym on the campus of Fresno State.
The vision of ReadFresno literacy project is to get every child to read at grade level by the end of the third grade. To accomplish this, ReadFresno will launch a four-site pilot project that will expand to a community-wide literacy initiative for children pre-kindergarten through third grade. The focus of this initiative will be on those children reading below grade level and targeting children in neighborhoods surrounding the fifty lowest-performing elementary schools in Fresno County.
Wanting to ensure young children have the literacy tools needed to succeed, ReadFresno has some startling facts showcasing the need for such a project:
