Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State hosts the NCAA Men's and Women's Western Regionals on Saturday, November 13. The event determines which teams and runners will advance to the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana in two weeks from the Western Region, which includes schools from Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Nevada and California.
The women's 6k race will begin at 11 a.m. and the men's 10k race will begin at noon. Admission to see both races is free, and will be held in Fresno's scenic Woodward Park, rain or shine. Woodward Park has become a familiar setting for the Regionals, with Fresno State hosting the Regionals for the 14th time.
"We expect to see some outstanding runners Saturday," said Fresno State head coach Shannon Lieder. "Stanford, The No. 1 women's team in the country is coming, as is No. 7 Arizona State. The men's side is also particularly strong this year, with No. 2 Stanford, No. 6 Cal Poly and No. 8 Arizona State attending the meet."
This is the second collegiate event Fresno State has hosted this year, in addition to the Fresno State Invitational that was held on Saturday, September 11th.
"It is always a pleasure and an honor to host a premier event like this," said Lieder. "It gives the school and the community a lot of positive exposure, and allows high school runners to see what they can look forward to in the future. The student-athletes competing at this meet are definitely great role models."
There are 28 schools represented in the men's race, and 35 in the women's race, including Fresno State, which has entered its top runner, sophomore Andrea Buckner.
