FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State men's and women's basketball teams entertained fans on Wednesday night during the Red/White scrimmage, officially signaling the start of the 2004-05 season.
In addition to 15-minute scrimmages for both teams, fans witnessed a three-point contest and slam dunk contest.
After player introductions, head coaches Ray Lopes and Stacy Johnson-Klein addressed the crowd and gave a brief outlook on their team leading up to the women's scrimmage.
Red team starters for the women included Toni Atherley, Aritta Lane, Amy Parrish, Chantella Perera and Mirenda Swearengin. The white team consisted of Brittani Green, Veronica Mack, Jasmine Plummer, Faith Probst and Tierre Wilson.
Both squads shot well in the early going, with the red team maintaining their shooting touch for a 21-10 victory. Amy Parrish led all scorers with nine points, while Aritta Lane chipped in with eight. Faith Probst and Tierre Wilson tallied three points apiece to lead the white team.
Following the women's scrimmage, both teams participated in a three-point contest, the men at one end and the women at the other. Hector Hernandez and Kendra Walker-Roche both survived until the finals, which Hernandez won by sinking nine three-pointers.
A 15-minute men's scrimmage was next, with the red team consisting of Chris Berry, Dominique White, Jack Marlow, David Brower, Dwight O'Neil and Donovan Morris; and the white team comprised of Harry Good, Jose Sanchez, Dreike Bouldin, Joe Tucker, Ja'Vance Coleman, Carl Ross and Chris Brazelton.
The red team prevailed 22-9 behind six points each from Berry, Morris and Marlow. Carl Ross scored six for the white, including a crowd-pleasing reverse dunk.
Mustafa Al-Sayyad (knee) and Hector Hernandez (hamstring) sat out the scrimmage portion of the night due to injuries. Both players are listed as day-to-day.
Lastly, the fans in attendance were entertained with a dunk contest to close the evening. O'Neil and Ross stood out among the five Bulldogs who participated, reaching the finals. Ross, who was a teammate of O'Neil's at Fresno's Washington Union High School, was voted by the fans as the night's best dunker.
