FRESNO, Calif. - Following another in what has been a season-full of gut-wrenching losses, Fresno State will once again be forced to bounce back Saturday at 7 p.m. against Boise State. The Bulldogs are 11-10 (7-5 WAC) following a last-minute home loss to UTEP on Thursday night. They are in fifth place in the league standings. The Broncos enter 14-8 (6-6) and tied for sixth after losing at Nevada 92-78 two nights ago. The winner of tonight's game will have a leg up in staying out of one of the "pigtail" games at the WAC Tournament.
The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 9-2, including victories of four out of the five games between the two schools since Boise State joined the WAC in 2001. Fresno State is 4-1 all-time at home against the Broncos, including a hard-fought 61-54 victory last year at Selland Arena. In the previous meeting between the two teams this year, the Bulldogs shot a season-high 61.2 percent en route to a 78-61 victory in Boise.
Based on how dominating Fresno State was at Selland Arena from 1995-03, it's difficut to fathom what has happened the the Bulldogs this year in home games. Beginning in 1995, Jerry Tarkanian's first year, through 2003, Ray Lopes' inaugural season, Fresno State went an impressive 116-21 (.847) at Selland Arena. But that has all changed dramatically in 2003-04, the Bulldogs' first year in the new, on-campus Save Mart Center. Fresno State is just 6-5 at home this year, including only 3-2 in WAC home games. The Bulldogs' home record is the third-worst in the league, ahead of only SMU (4-5) and San Jose State (3-8).
