PHOENIX - No. 23 Fresno State opened the second day of the Fiesta Bowl Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Western Michigan as the Bulldogs improved to 2-1 in tournament action.
Recording its second shutout victory of the season, the 'Dogs banged out 10 hits as a pair of doubles and a solo home run by sophomore All-America shortstop Christina Clark highlighted the morning.
Junior All-America pitcher Jamie Southern pitched her second straight shutout victory and notched her first ten-strikeout game of the year as she set down 11 Bobcats. She scattered six hits and allowed one walk to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Four Bulldogs had a multiple-hit game: junior left fielder Porsha Finley (2-3, run, RBI, double, walk, 1-1 stolen base), Clark (2-4, run, 2 RBI, home run), freshman catcher Nichole Willis (2-4, double) and junior first baseman Shasta Lewis (2-3).
Fresno State struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Finley led the inning off with a double to right center. After Southern was out on an infield pop up, Clark roped a single into center field to score Finley.
In the fourth with two outs and junior center fielder Kristy Villasenor on second base, Finley dumped a pitch into shallow center to score Villasenor.
In the fifth, Clark connected for her second home run of the year after drilling a 2-2 pitch well over the center field fence for her second RBI of the game.
Western Michigan, which fell to 0-4 on the year, picked up six hits and committed two errors. Laura Stewart took the loss as she walked two and struck out four.
The Bulldogs (2-1) will battle Syracuse this afternoon at approximately 1:30 p.m. (PST).
